I use it when I can't take my Acaci and it seems to work well. Heather speaks well of it in her book. Give it a try.

I use the caplets when I am away from home. I keep a stash in my purse. Works great for me.

I don't think it can have the opposite effect. I believe that for every 2 Fiber Con pills, it gives you 1 gram of fiber. You probably need to take 2 at a time & make sure your taking it w/ 8oz. of water!!! You may need to slowly increase your intake. I take generic Citricell pills. I take 2 after each meal, so that's 6 per day. I always drink enough liquid, that's so important. They may not work otherwise!

The fibercon contains calcium, which can be constipating. I'm not sure if that's what causes some of us to have worse C with it...but I've heard this same thing from other people.

Sand did some research on this and found that Calcium Citrate is the best for those with C. Link Also, it's best to supplement the calcium with magnesium.

You would want to avoid calcium carbonate if you were a C.

Fibercon or Other Pills? new

Hey all,

I'm new to the board so forgive any missteps here...

I just started taking the Fibercon, but for the life of me I can't find how much fiber it provides. Does anyone know? Someone suggested that it's only 1gram, but after one whole day of taking it, I'm feeling a little more stable than the previous week.

a) does anyone know how much fiber fibercon adds
b) does anyone recommend any of the other pill-based supplements?

(a) Fibrecon

Active ingredient (in each caplet)

Calcium polycarbophil 625 mg equivalent to 500 mg polycarbophil..................... Bulk-forming laxative

http://www.fibercon.com/label.asp

Calcium Polycarbophil is the calcium salt of polyacrylic acid cross-linked with polyether or divinyl glycol. When dispersed in water, the molecules become uncoiled and extended into a three-dimensional insoluble network. It may absorb water up to 70 times of its own weight. This gelling nature gives Calcium Polycarbophil its versatility.

(b) Benefibre caplets

http://www.benefiber.com/products/index.shtml?benefiberCaplets

Be careful of the chewables they contain sorbitol and sucralose.

Heather runs down how much SF (and in some cases IF) is in each of the major types of SFS here.

If you're D, you want to be sure your SFS has only SF.

Hey there,

This is perfect. Thank you for the response.

I see these 'grades' of IBS...can you point me to where that's referenced on Heather's site?

Thanks,
Jason

Actually, they're types, not grades. Thank goodness, since as a D I'd be pretty close to failing.

IBS-D is diarrhea predominant
IBS-C is constipation predominant
IBS-A is alternating between diarrhea and constipation
IBS-P is pain predominant

You can take a look at these and many other abbreviations used around here in this post.

Well-Heather states in her book that she does not feel it works as well as Citrucel, but is better than nothing for emergencies. I've been back on it full time for a month now, because where I live it is cheaper than the Benefiber and Citrucel. It has helped me quite a bit. However, if I had the money, I would probably prefer the Benefiber because it works a little better for me. It's a pain in the neck, though because you always have to have something available to mix it with. There's hardly anything I can mix it in because juice either gives me stomach acid or diarrhea, and I can't eat yogurt anymore. So the Fibercon it is. I did see some Benefiber tablets in my store recently, but it said they were being discontinued. I would say-if you can afford the Benefiber, try it first. If not, the Fibercon can't hurt and may help. Since I've been on it (plus the diet) I have average of one attack every 7-8 compared to every other day which is what I used to have. Good luck!

Hmm..what is your liquid intake? You could possibly re-read the chapter on fiber in "IBS-the first year" or the section on fiber on this site. I'm a D-predominant, so I didn't pay much attention to the C part. I know it can also take a couple weeks to starte working.

So..as far as you know, not true that the benefiber capsules are being discontinued? Maybe that web site can tell me how to get my hands on some. Thanks!
