A specialist believes my lightheadedness and headaches, as well as stomach problems, come from my inability to digest sugar. He's proposing a diet full or proteins and veggies. Question - does this mean no bread, period? Do health food stores have any bread without refined sugar or white flour? How can I have a sandwich with no bread? Help!

My advice is to get a breadmaker! Although my recipes say add sugar, I've found that it's completely unneccessary. So if you're making your own bread it'll be easy to be sure that it's sugar free and made from good flour.

If you use wholemeal flour, that will increase the IF content of the bread so it won't be quite as IBS safe tho.

An alternative is to use the principles of the GI (glycaemic index) diet. Have limited amount of the refined carbs (eg. just have 1 sandwich of white bread) and have plenty of protein and veggies with that. The low GI protein and veggies will reduce the GI rating of the entire meal, making it safer for you.

If you can get it I highly recommend a book called "Antony Worral Thompson's GI diet".

you can use all sorts of things to feed the yeast- either sourdough style breads where a starter with yeast is left to form a sponge, or anything with any form of sugar in it.. including fruit or juice or even vegetables- I have a great cajun bread that uses red bell pepper to feed the yeast.. one warning- you can make bread from pure whole grain flours but it will rise less or slower then regular breads.

I've seen breads at Trader Joes, Whole Foods, and Wild Oats without sugar or white flour added. Have you ever tried Spelt Bread? They make it in white or regular. That's what I am currently eating. I find it in the freezer section.
