My mother has severe IBS (Diarrhea) and the last two years been battling high blood pressure. My family has been noticing a correlation between her IBS spells and her spikes with blood pressure. Are there any articles relating high blood pressure with IBS? Any news would be helpful!

Hi. Sorry to hear your mom has to deal with such severe IBS. I don't know about a link between high blood pressure and IBS, but you could do a search in the IBS Research Library board. HTH!

Anecdotally, there are lots of us here with low blood pressure and IBS. On the other hand, BobK had a stroke directly related to IBS. So there may be a relationship for some folks!

Yes, as AC mentioned. If you strain while going, that will drive your BP up by at least 5 to 10 points(mm mercury) on both the systolic and dyastolic values. When I had my stroke, I had also flooded myself with water which really drove it up.So beware drinking too much fluids and straining. If she doesn't have HBP medicine, get it! I'm on two HBP med's. -Bob

I was going to say -- just the opposite here -- low blood pressure.

Well, I am a "D" and I too have high blood pressure. I've never taken my BP when having an attack, but I'd bet it would be elevated BIG time.
That's very interesting; I've never thought of it.
Does your mother take BP meds? If not, she should see her doctor! Obviously, the answer for her would be to get stable so she has fewer and fewer attacks, and I also believe in exercise (and losing weight) to bring down that BP. That's worked for my hubby who USED to have high BP. Now (I hope) it's working for me too, now that I'm losing weight (and exercising like crazy).
Good luck with Mom.

What kind of "exercising like crazy" are you doing? I really want to do something, but I seem to be in one of those auto-reset modes where I keep changing my mind about what type of exercise program I want to pursue. And, yeah, I know that's just a sneaky way to keep from actually having to get up and do something.
Thanks.

Exercise is a life-long "hobby", so it better be enjoyable! Find something fun. For me, it was always rowing. Hubby and I used to be competitive rowers, and a HUGE part of training was the "ERG" (rowing machine). While we don't row any more, we still train every day on the ERG. Hubby pulls 10,000 meters to my measly 4,000. That's okay, though, 'cause my workouts are more intense.
When the weather permits, we kayak, and in the summer that's every day.
See, it's fun stuff, stuff we don't consider as exercise.
Do you like to walk? That's fantastic exercise. I used to be a runner, but can't any more because of my knee surgery. Still, I want to be able to walk, so my goal is to lose my weight, and as a reward, at the end of my 8 months, if I've reached goal, then I'm investing in a treadmill. It'll be hard to not run on it, but I'll have to resist the temptation. (I have no cartilege in my knee anymore.)
Find something you ENJOY. I used to love to do aerobics (before my knee surgery), and I had every aerobics tape on the market. Richard Simmons was my fave because he kept me laughing, and his music was more fun than other tapes. Do you like aerobics?
Pilates is another alternative suggestion, and I tried it once. It requires a lot of room to move around, so if you have the space, goferit.
With Weight Watchers, I can add points to my daily limit, depending on the type and duration of my exercise. It's an added incentive for me.
Check out the Fitness Board and see what others are doing. But, whatever you choose, just know that it's a PERMANENT life style change, not something you do for a week or two and then give up. The older you are, the more important exercise is. At my age, it's CRUCIAL. I'm lucky that I enjoy rowing and kayaking.

I think the largest chasm in the world yawns between those who enjoy exercise and those who don't - period. Guess which category I fall into?
Seriously, thanks, Bev. You've given me something to think about. And you're very impressive - I've always admired athletes in that same wistful way I admire people with clean homes and those who read Homer for fun.
As for your comment that at your age, exercise is CRUCIAL - I have a feeling your age isn't all that much different from my age.

Hi, thanks for your info! Mom doesn't get enough of liquids, so the extra water would not apply. However, I'm sure the reverse in absence of water may hold true too. She is on one HB medicine.

Hi, thanks for the reply! Yes, mom is on one HB medicine and we thought things were in control. However, I believe a combination of factors caused her "spell". Over doing and not eating properly that day. Again, thanks for your thoughts!
