Hi Sensational,

You are under a misconception that we don't have "as many fruit and veggies as other people." We DO! It's IMPERATIVE! We just eat it a little differently than "other people." We pulverize it and cook it until it's easily digestible, that's all. We've discussed this ad nauseum in these boards.

This program is very healthy, so you should stop worrying; after all, it's that stress that got ya here in the first place, am I right?

I did the program religiously for 3 years before I finally got stable. I ate more vegetable soup and fruit smoothies than I EVER have -- and enjoyed them even more -- and, by the way, stayed healthy.

So no more worrying, okay? Get out that blender and soup kettle!

There are TONS of fruits & veggies on this diet. PLEASE reread the guidelines.

Like Bev said -- become best friends with your food processor!
Soups, smoothies, pureed veggie sauces/creations, etc. abound!

I agree with Bevrs and Wind, but also, if you're worried about your cholesterol specifically, it's my understanding that soluble fiber is highly recommended for lowering cholesterol. It acts to sweep the cholesterol out of your system.

If you're really concerned with cholesterol, consider taking flaxseed oil capsules which you can find at a good health food store. If you do a search in this board, you'll find a lot of posts about them.

Sensational. Cholesterol comes from eggs, beef, chicken, etc and your grandfather (according to the commercial) & it's true. This diet is low in eggs, beef, pork etc. Chicken ok but we don't eat a lot of it. fish, ok too. Bette

Within the first 3 months that I was on this diet (very strict) I dropped my cholesterol 60 points! My doc couldn't wait until I got back in her office so she could find out what I did different. I can't take any of the cholesterol meds without severe "D" as a side effect. Eat all the veggies and fruits you can stomach, cooked soft or mashed and stay away from the red meat, dairy, egg yolks, etc. that Heather recommends. Good health to you!

When I first got my diet going in the right direction, I found that I felt less tired, and less sedate. I felt better and I have been trying follow the guidelines suggested here by Heather. I have a medical appoint next month and hopefully I will find that my cholesterol is much lower.

Before getting the connection in my diet, I felt like it was hard to move around, and hard to breath and a tighness in my shoulders and chest. None of these were actually serious, but I felt that maybe with the problems I have then it was probably because of the high cholesterol that I had for many years now, with out remedy. My Dr's had also tried the lowering meds but they also caused me more problems.

I recall the first day that I sat and ate nearly a ton of frosted cheerios. If you read the box, which I just happened to, you will find that they are soluble fiber. So suddenly I was a little kid again eating my cheerios.

Also my Dr had recommended that I increase my fiber both for IBS and for the cholesterol. Since I had a mild heart attack in 1999, I was very willing to do anything to get healthier. My first week I ate cheerios and white bread. For the first week in 7 years, I was feeling better, and knew I had turned a corner. Oh I still have problems but I am working on it.

Please stay strong and positive,

Are you able to take flaxseed oil? I am afraid of anything that says oil.

How about omega 3 oils? I thought I read that that is good for you, too?

Do a search for both; you'll find lotsa good posts about them in here. We talked about this quite a bit.

Flaxseed oil contains essential Omega oil, very good for the heart and cholesterol. But it is an oil, regardless. The capsules worked best for me.

This is an example of my biggest worry about this diet. It's easy to eat soluble fiber like white bread all the time and play it safe by not risking veggies. But you NEED fruits and veggies for their nutrients. That is extremely important and I think Heather makes that clear. Some, like sweet potatoes, are pure soluble fiber and you can eat them whenever and on an empty stomach (check out her soluble fiber list of foods). Others, like beans and greens, you need to eat a little more carefully- that does NOT mean don't eat them. It's very important to strive to get a lot of veggies, especially those vitamin-packed green leafies, into your diet. I think a lot of us, me included, need to do a better job of that.

Bevrs,

Are you here?? I was sitting here reading this morning and suffering with a constant cramp in the lowest part of my body not in my legs, wondering if you were around.

I remember you saying about trapped gas and I was wondering what did you ever do about it???

Hi LB,

I take "Gas Relief." I guess it's like "Gas-X," I don't know, but it totally rid me of the problem. It was recommended to me by another gal on these boards who has a problem with trapped gas. "Gas Relief" contains 125mg. Simethicone, the active ingredient. It relieves pressure, bloating and discomfort.

Yes, like Bevrs, Simethecone is wonderful for any "trapped gas" or pressure feeling. Gas-X is a name brand. It's available in generic form, here, in Canada, which I purchase rather cheaply. The generic brand has the benefit of no sorbitol for those sensitive to sorbitol (like me!). "Diovol Plus" is another great gas containing OTC simethecone product that my MD even gives me free samples of to enjoy.

I find Beano very effective, personally, and take Beano pills with notoriously gassy & personally bothersome veggies. (It doesn't work on everything, I find, so I just omit that which it doesn't effectively assist from my diet.
ONIONS is one that it just doesn't help with, personally. Broccoli & Cauliflower, but NEITHER ONIONS nor garlic. Ditto for potatoes & tomatoes & carrots. I won't share my Schindler's list of exiled vegetables!)

Also, I believe that alot of people do not effectively chew their food & that is a terrible gas-causer. So is eating too quickly.

Kate, IBS-D.

It'll keep me awake until I get up and deal with it. No, there's no way I could sleep through it.

Just to chime in on the importance of veggies. Before I knew I had IBS I had slowly stopped eating lots of veggies that I knew would bother me. Many were leafy greens like spinach.

Having neglected a whole range of veggies, I began to get calcium deposits on my hands and spine. At 25 this really freaked me out. My doc had no idea what these bumps were and thought it would be best to cut open my hand to take a look at them. I declined. I work with my hands.

So I called up a friend who is a chinese herbalist. I was sceptical but didn't know who else to talk to. After a long discussion over the phone (yup, he didn't even see me in person), he sent me a magnesium supplement and discussed the problems in my diet.

That was 2 years ago and I haven't had a painful calcium deposit since. In fact, I get enough magnesium in my diet and multi vitamin that I no longer take the magnesum supplement. Go veggies!!!

I have discovered the wonderful world of baby food.

Apricots, pears, and blueberries are my favorites.

Without reading the whole thread, I'll say "sort of"... you get the vitamins and calories, but not the fiber.
