until you're stable, you should really stick to white rice. once your symptoms are well under control, brown rice can be part of the IF you *gradually* work back into your diet. it may work for you, but it might not. remember, though, that it won't count as your SF any more, so you'll always need to be careful with it.

I eat Spanish rice and it doesn't bother me.

Try half-and-half and see how it suits you...having your Acacia first and having lots of SF veggies with it will help.

Half white rice and half brown rice, that is.
Make that your IF for that meal though and stick to SF veggies and such.
Of course how you handle that will depend on your own tolerances and stability.

I did too. I thought Heather's book even said so but after a while you can get uncertain about anything.

but they still have their IF exteriors - the bran. This is why you don't want to overdo it on brown rice, but you still need to get as much whole grains and IF as you can tolerate in your diet. Mixing brown with white rice (which is white because the bran/IF has been removed) can make it easier to digest since you'd have a larger SF base.
This is explained in The First Year: IBS, pg 32, "I'm Confused! How Can the Same Food Have Insoluble and Soluble Fiber?" This info is also on the site, in the Diet FAQ section: Both Fibers HTH!

In EFI, page 127, there's a recipe for "Basic Brown Rice", which begins:
Quote:
Brown rice is wonderful with grilled salmon and all types of vegetarian meals. Try a bowl plain with a splash of fresh lemon juice and a sprinkle of garlic salt for a quick, tasty, and safe snack.
In the Web page you quote, Heather concludes by saying:
Quote:
Oatmeal, brown rice, and corn meal (polenta) tend to be the best-tolerated whole grains for IBS.
So it seems that brown rice, like oatmeal, is one of those "soluble fibers" that some people can tolerate and some can't.
It's funny, because I was convinced it was IF, too, but when I took a close look at the SF list, all it says is "Rice". Too bad - I hate the stuff.
