Thanks for pointing out the EFI one! Wow, that is confusing!
I don't see anything contradictory about the web page quote, but like you said it's one of those "some can, some can't" foods. And I know that's frustrating when you're still feeling bad and just want to know what you can eat without having to experiment.

I guess I never noticed that note in EFI. Thanks for pointing it out Sand. I always just assumed that brown rice was just as unsafe as whole wheat, which does terrible things to me. But them, I'm totally fine with oatmeal. Maybe I'll give some brown rice a try...

The interesting thing about brown rice is that it doesn't have much more fiber than white rice, if at all...so i find it hard to believe that the extra IF (which is probably .5-1g per serving) would be terribly harmful, especially since there is also SF, and rice is one of the safest grains for digestive problems. I would try it and see if it gives you problems.

That is exactly what was confusing to me. I have been eating a ton of it with no problems b/c I assumed it was SF. No problems with it...so I was surprised it was being referred to as IF. Thanks for clearing it up Sand!

It's not black and white. We may tell newbies that some things are SF and some are IF to make it easy for them, but it's rarely that simple. SF foods are those with a high SF content and relatively little or minimised IF...this is why Graham crackers are considered safe despite being wholewheat based (high SF content, IF content minimised). Apart from Acacia (one of the few SFSs with no IF), I don't think they are actually many things that are COMPLETELY IF free. But there are plenty of things that are safe. ![](/messageboards/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif)
If you can eat brown rice, oatmeal, etc then GREAT. It's just wise to be careful if you haven't tried it before.

It might be okay to eat brown rice with veggies and no other SF food with the meal (for some people)...even if I don't take an SFS?

Beth, Well, According to Northwestern's fiber chart, a half a cup of cooked brown rice contains a total of 1.7 g's of fiber of which 0.1 is SF and 1.6 is IF. But that's part of what I'm going to have for dinner tonight along with my last Whole Foods sweet potato. You know, I had nine packed in my luggage, five in a plastic bag in my big suitcase, and four not bagged at all, in plain sight in my small suitcase, and the security buggers confiscated them on me!! Well, I guess you can't transport sweet potatos across state lines. I'll have to get my sister to smuggle me some more in the mail. I had some sweet potato pie from Jewel-Osco when I was down there ,and it was good. I'll have to look in Heather's book to see if there is a recipe for it, or check the recipe board I suppose. -Bob

It totally depends on your tolerance. Personally I couldn't use brown rice as a base for IF-rich veggies but I could have it with SF-rich veggies.

How true this is! Foods, in general are rarely completely one or the other, i.e. SF or IF. A lot of people neglect this.
