I think I know the answer, but it ostrich meat okay? I had it a few times pre-IBS years ago and it tasted a lot like beef to me.

It is classified as poultry by the USDA, but looks like red meat.

I do see it at Woodman's now and then, so I thought I'd ask.

this has come up before on the Boards. (I was going to suggest you do a Search as a joke, then figured I'd actually try one.) I guess all the IBS-related wisdom in the whole world actually is right here.

The consensus seems to be that since it's a bird and very low fat, it's IBS-safe. (Boy, I'd like to see the calorie counter that lists "ostrich" - right between "oregano" and "oyster" I guess.)

I don't know why I didn't think to do a search. I should know better at this point! Guess I shouldn't post first thing in the morning!

Well, really, I don't think any sane person would have thought to do a Search. I only did one as a joke. I almost fell off my chair laughing when stuff actually popped out.

I had some ostrich once, and it was delicious! Of course, that I had it once and didn't die of cramps doesn't prove much.....

Interesting. According to this page from something called the Ostrich Growers Meat Company, ostrich is only about 9% fat, where chicken stands at 35% (that would be including dark meat I'm assuming), pork is 41%, and beef is 60%!!! Ouch!!

So, it looks to me like it would be safe, yeah

Just a word of warning, I eat Ostrich, but I make sure to get the one that does not have any added seasonings to the package. I made the mistake once and picked up the wrong ones (not well marked on the package) and it had stuff like garlic, and msg type of hidden spices and flavorings. Boy did I regret that!!!
