Yup, dairy. I did find something on the Web that says cultured buttermilk should be easier on the lactose-intolerant. However, for IBSer's, there's more to dairy than just lactose - milk proteins are also problematic. Therefore, I would consider cultured buttermilk off limits.

If you need buttermilk for a recipe, you can sour soy or rice milk by adding vinegar.
