All I have been able to eat is bananas, plain noodles, potatoes, and sour dough bread with smart balance butter. I eat chicken every few days, but I need more. Peanut butter, apple sauce, and baked potatoe chips make me sick. I cannot afford Heather's book right now my doctor bills have me strapped down considering I have no health benefits yet. What are you eating and drinking? Can I take vitamins? I feel so drained.

Thanks

Todd

I'm like you....My system is so jacked up right now all I can eat really is soluble food, too.

The cheapest and easiest staple of mine is mashed potato/green bean burritos. I boil about 6 potatoes ahead of time and mash them up so I can have mashed potatoes anytime. I put some mashed potatoes and green beans on a flour tortilla, roll it up and microwave it for 35 seconds and it's very good, filling and is putting weight back on me. Try that! I eat at least 4 of these everyday and it really helps with my D. Most of my attacks come on because of my GERD and mashed potato/green bean burritos really help with my GERD, too. It's all the Nilla Wafers that trigger my reflux!!! My IBS-D doesn't like them too much either!!

Can you eat rice?? I cannot stand rice, but alot of people say it's pretty filling and is good for D, too.

Ummm..... I cannot tolerate vitamins right now in any form. Not even flinstones....so I would wait on the vitamins until you can eat a little bit better. It's your call, though! Just my personal opinion. They really upset my gut right now!!!

Feel Better Soon!!

If you can tolerate flour tortillas (my gut loves them more than rice!), they are a good soluble fiber. I will literally put ANYTHING in a flour tortilla and eat it as a burrito. Fruit, veggies, eggs, anything! It provides a good buffer for Insoluble Fiber.

Try it and see how you do. They are very filling for me.

Hi Todd,
Have you read the list of Soluble fiber foods? Oatmeal is a great way to fill up! English muffins w/ seedless jam,I also eat pretzels, dry cereal(like rice Chex or Honey nut Cheerios or Kix), dried cranberries, & plenty of veggies! I just stick to water, not much eles agrees w/ me for drinking. Hope this helps!

Hi there,

I am so sorry your tummy is so unstable right now, hopefully it will begin to calm down and you will be able to tolerate more foods that will give you more energy and take the edge off feeling so tired.
I think that getting protein is very important, but I know it can be very hard to digest. You said that you cannot tolerate peanut butter, and that may be because of the high fat content. Have you tried low fat peanut butter in very small amounts? I used to put little bits on rolled up flour tortillas and never had any problems.
Grilled white fish, along with the chicken you are already having, is a good source of protein and is generally pretty gentle on your tummy. Try small amounts of cod or hallibut or something like that with rice or some other soluble fiber foods.
Are you making sure that you are eating every couple of hours? Your body needs fueling, and especially if your diet is so restricited, you want to make sure it is getting something ever few hours.

As for vitamins, do a board search on this as there have been a lot of posts on this in the past. I personally take a generic brand childrens vitamin, twice a day. The other brands all had sugar alcohols in them (sorbitol, manitol, etc) that can be very, very irritating even to people without IBS so be very careful of these additives if you do look for some vitamins. Also, don't get ones with extra vitamin C added as vitamin C can aggravate D as well.

If you can have potatoes, try sweet potatoes as well. They have a few more nutrients in them that your body is probably wanting. Have a look at the list of safe snacks at the top of this board and see if any of them might sit okay with you.

Good luck, and keep us posted!

Cheers,
--Steph

Thank you everyone for the replies. I have tried all kinds of foods including the ones offered here on the board and I just can't handle them. Fruits and and cooked veggies tear me up. Its been almost 2 months. I have tried the tortillas, but got sick when I tried anything with them.

I started a new career this week and it is so hard to fight through these attacks all day. I dread being in any type of meeting.

Are you taking any Soluble Fibre Supplements? It has a tendancy to help both D and C. Have you started taking any probiotics yet? Have you tried peppermint, or chammomile to help ease your anxiety or stress level?

Why type of meds from your doctor are you taking? Is it possible those are making you feel so sick?

I take Benefiber as a supplement. The prescriptions are Cipro and Bentyl. I also take Immodium a few times a day. My stomach just gurgles all day long. Its like there is just water in my system. I have tried Peppermint tea, but it doesn't help.

I hate to complain, but going to the Doc just isn't helping. I feel so irritated. The weekends always seem to go good, but during the week its terrible.

I couldn't even eat BREAD when I was on Cipro. I lived off of clear fluids while I was on that crap. BLEH!!! I had non-stop D, too!! So, don't worry, it will get better.

Cipro is the ONLY antibiotic that doesn't throw me into convulsions. And I'm grateful for it too when I have one of my infamous UTIs! I totally could not tell the difference between taking it and after taking it; it's a Godsend!

The worst antibiotic for me was Nitrofura Macro containing magnesium trisilicate. NOW you're talkin' mean stuff! I was throwing up uncontrollably and continuously while having "D" at the same time. Oy....

Hi Bev, the Cipro worked for you and your doctor knew what was wrong with you to give you that perscription right? If I remember correctly, I don't think Lannie's doctor really knows what is wrong with him, and is just hoping the Cipro will cure his IBS. Is that correct Lannie?

Lannie, I think maybe you should consult a differnt GI doctor, and I really, really, really think you should give probiotics a try. It will take probably a good 2-3 months before you notice a difference though, but I think this might be the way to go. Just my opinion.

Oh yeah, you bet the doc knew about my IBS; he also knew that all the other antibiotics caused me extreme negative reactions similar to IBS symptoms only worse. However, the doc did NOT give me Cipro to "cure" my IBS; it was for UTIs which I get all the time.

The Cipro is the only antibiotic I can tolerate. And thankfully I do tolerate it well.

Sounds like you have a good doctor. I get kind of worried when I hear doctors say "Well I don't know what's wrong with you, but here, be a guinea pig and try this. It might make you feel good."

Yes, you are right Gracie my Doc has no idea what is wrong with me. He's just using me as guinea pig for sure.

yesterday was my last day on Cipro. Nexy he wants me to take some kind of drug that is like Zoloft, but I can't remember the name. I really don't wanna take any thing that will affect my mind in any way. Its just my stomach, not anything in my head. Atleast thats how I feel.

I'm not going to go back. I want to see if I can't just take the Bentyl, Immodium and work on my diet.

I don't think I do well on any any antibiotics, I guess. All of them make me sick as a dog except for penicillin (sp?). Anyway, I will definitely add that one to my list, BEVVY!! I have never heard of it before but if it made you sick, it will probably definitely make me sick, too!!! BLEH!!!

That's killer stuff. I switched off of augmenten to amoxacillian and they are both killing me. Lots of D. Which of course, mimics IBS. Why on earth are you on antibiotics? You might also try the liquid probiotics, if you can find them. I get them at Whole Foods in little plastic six packs. It's like runny yogurt. Nasty crap, but does seem to be the best thing out there.

Have you been diagnosed with gluten antibodies or anything? I have been debating this gluen dilemma for too long now and like to hear from others who don't eat it.
