Hello! I have started going to a naturopath and it has helped the constipation. The first part of her plan was for me to do a cleanse - CleanseSmart by Renewlife. There are two parts to it, and I was never able to take the full dose of the colon cleanse portion because it worked too well. If you are interested in only that part of the cleanse it is also sold separately as CleanseMore. The only negative thing about it is the cramping that would happen right before a BM.

The second part was dietary suggestions. Her advice was that the plate at lunch and supper should be divided into three sections - 1/4 protein, 1/4 starch, and 1/2 the plate should be vegetables. This is the tricky part, because many foods we consider vegetable are actually considered starches - corn, peas, green/yellow beans, root vegetables such as carrots and beets, squash and pumpkin. The list of choices for vegetables are leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, cucumber, zucchini, peppers, mushrooms, sprouts, asparagus.

She also gave me a list of foods to watch out for as many people have sensitivities to them. These include oranges, artificial sweeteners, corn, coffee, alcohol, tomatoes, bell peppers, peanuts, soy, dairy, meat and wheat.

This isn't the easiest diet to follow and during the holiday season it was almost impossible for me to even come close to following it, but when I did follow it I had major improvement in most of my symptoms. I have even been into dairy products over the holidays without major consequences. She has me taking digestive enzymes and the long term goal is to improve my situation so I only need to take stuff like that occasionally. Right now I take the CleanseMore pills if I start to feel constipated or if I ate something I probably shouldn't have ate. For me it takes at least 12 hours for those to kick in. I'm also taking a calcium-magnesium supplement, but that alone hasn't been enough to prevent constipation. It's definitely worth trying out even part of this plan.

Hope this helps!

It's great that this approach works for you, but since this is a support Board for people on Heather's diet, I want to point out that colon cleansing is directly antithetical to Heather's approach to IBS. Heather's approach is based on soothing the colon to reduce spasms. Colon cleansing irritates the colon, hence the cramps you mention. Anyone considering doing a colon cleanse can do a Board Search and find lots of past posts on this subject.

Also, dairy is an IBS trigger and the fact that it didn't have immediate consequences doesn't mean it isn't causing problems. Finally, in my opinion, making 1/2 of a meal SF is safer than just 1/4 and, except for zuchinni and mushrooms, the vegetable choices you list would destroy my stomach unless I ate them with a solid SF base.

I'm not saying this approach isn't worth considering for people who aren't doing well with Heather's diet, I'm just saying this approach runs counter to Heather's approach and I don't think you can combine the two.

But could you tell me what digestive enzymes you are taking and how much.

I'm glad you feel this has worked for you, but beware the CleanseMore contains Senna which ic not good long term. Can cause cathartic colon and problems.

Hi Bob--

I work downtown (south Loop), so meeting at 4:30 or so either in the Loop or River North (around the hospital area, roughly) would work well for me. I know that there's a Corner Bakery near the hospital, but I'm not sure how late it's open.

If your referring to the bakery by Northwestern GI clinice, that's the corner bakery I eat my lunch at while waiting to see the Doctor! I have to take the bus and walk to St. Clair's so I leave early and brown bag a lunch and eat their!

youre stuck too?? SO AM I!! ps--i *do not* recommend taking/trying that organic fiber blend [member awhile back we were talking about it?] i got it and well--you may as well just stir in psyllium powder to water and try to choke it down! it tastes like liquid oatmeal which doesnt make you want to take it moreso remembering to take it daily is a pain. i stopped my routine of it before it even started and since then ive been stuck with the C too its dreadfully uncomfortable.

i havent a thing to recommend you either--otherwise id probably be feeling better as well. anything i could offer has probably been said already but its worth a try! maybe go back to a few days of BTC? i know its a pain but b/c its so starchy it will probably build up good poops so you can at least get some relief. stick to basics and keep water and a pot of peppermint tea on hand. do you work/go to school? maybe take a day off. ive been relaxing from the holidays and though im still C, its been a lot less stressful on my bowels then if i were to be working. also, i wanted you to know: i found this great little place by me that offers hour-long yoga sessions for only $10! theres no hidden fees or paying in advance and its really great. i know youre in chicago but im not sure where. if youre into yoga and around milwaukee/central/foster, theres a strip mall with a building called GLADSTONE CHIROPRACTICS. they teach yoga there and it is wonderful! ive only gone once but afterwards i felt great. they have mostly night hours too, around 7 and one saturday class at 10. i felt awesome after i left and want to keep it up for my IBS [i explained that to the instructer and she did special stretches specifically for digestion] anywhoo i hope you feel better sweetie! post back if you got some remedies i havent tried yet k? later!

Beth, Say, if you take a CTA bus to get to St. Clair st.You
can't possibly live real far south of Chicago. I thought
you meant like you lived 50 miles south or so.-Confused Bob

Hi AC, Then from what Beth said, I gather you're talking
about Northwestern Univ.'s Med School Hospital on St.Clair
st.? If so, which street intersection is nearest the bakery
? I might just be able to head on down there right after my
tests on thurs. or friday. I'll call my GI doc's office to-
morrow to check out my test times, I'm pretty sure they're
not going to last up to or past 430. I see that Ashley(
little bear) just posted. I'll email her and see if she can
make it too. -Bob
