Has anyone else been prescribed this? My Doc says even though my blood work has come back negative that I should take these antibiotics to be sure that I don't have an infection. So, I take it he is not sure I have IBS. He then says if this doesn't work he wants me to try an anxiety prescription. Something like Zoloft, but its called Elevian or something like that. He says maybe its my nerves. I think my D is getting worse than getting better. I have lost 10 pounds now and haven't hardly eaten in days. So far I eat a banana for breakfast and plain noodles for dinner. I take Bentyl, Benefiber, Immodium, and now Cipro for my gut. I don't see myself getting better taking all this crap.

Have you had a colonoscopy to rule out other illnesses?
Have you tried using the probiotics yet? I think you asked for advice a week or two ago. Did you try anything that was recommended to you including Heather's diet?

It is proven that people who take antibiotics may have D for several days, even if they do not have IBS. There are some post on here from people who have been on antibiotics for other reasons and have seen a increase in their D. I know first hand because before I got pregnant and diagnosed with IBS, I was taking antibiotics for a wisdom tooth infection and had D like crazy. I did not come down with my symptoms of IBS until after my first pregnancy, so thats how I know that it caused me to have D, when I was normal (years ago it seems like). It took me almost a year to become stable and be almost normal again. I am sure you will find something that will help you and it is only a matter of time. Have you tried acacia?

Very true! That's why probiotics should be a must after people take antibiotics.
Edited to add:
I'm surprised Lannie's doctor is putting him on a round of this antibiotic without really knowing what is wrong. According to this site http://www.ciprousa.com/ it is commonly used to treat UTI and Prostatis - related to the prostate. It kills bacteria so it is actually going to kill off any of the good bacteria, if he has any of it left. It may do more harm that good.

First, you're not going to be able to evaluate how well the Bentyl, Benefiber, and Immodium are working for you until you finish your course of Cipro since antibiotics can really screw up your digestive tract.
Second, I figure I'm going to have to take an SFS for the rest of my life - mine is Acacia, not Benefiber, but the principle is the same. I also figure I'm going to have to use Immodium to some extent for the rest of my life, although the longer I'm on Heather's diet the less I need. As for anti-spasmodics like Bentyl, I've gotten to the point where I haven't taken one in months, but they were very useful to me for a while. So the Cipro may well be crap, but I don't think anything else you're taking is.
I will also say, though, that until I got serious about eating according to Heather's diet, no medication did much to touch my D.
You should definitely do a Search on Cipro to see what problems people have had with it. When you do the Search for Cipro you should also find discussions about taking probiotics to try to counteract some of the antibiotic's impact on your digestive tract.
If the anti-depressant your doctor is recommending is "Elavil", I know there's a lot about that on the Boards, too.
HTH. Take care.

They had no idea what was wrong and since bloodwork came back fine they did a round of Cipro and I showed no improvement.....as a matter of fact my symptoms were worse! So, then he puts me on Flagyl!! Two rounds of antibiotics back to back....I was done!!! I was sooooo sick, I couldn't hardly eat anything!!! Anyway, I nursed myself back to health but it took a year or more. Then I got sick again this year and he wanted to do another round of antibiotics and I straight-up said "NO, THANKS!!".
Good Luck! Hope you get well, soon!! I have never tried Benefiber but I'm IBS-D, too and I use Citrucel "clear". It helps form my BM, tremendously!!

It all happens for a reason....I just wish my GI doc wasn't so ANTIBIOTIC happy! He always thinks the cure is another round of antibiotics.

and it wasn't my IBS flaring up. It was totally different and nothing I took (including Lomotil) worked on stopping it. My doctor prescribec Cipro thinking it was an infection or something. It did the trick but then I didn't go for about 4 days! I was normal after that (well normal for me) I know that Cipro is a strong antibiotic though and it can mess up your system pretty good. Not sure why he'd prescribe that unless he thought you had an infection or something. Sandy

Hi!
I'm a "D" also, and am stable. However, I've had the worst reactions to antibiotics than I have food. I've tried ALL of them (I get lots of UTIs), and found that the only antibiotic I can tolerate is Cipro. One of the antibiotics the doc gave me (nitrofura macro) caused me to vomit uncontrollably until I almost passed out, while having "D" at the same time. It was nasty.
I also take Imodium when needed, but thankfully I haven't needed it in a long time. Ditto with my Donnatal.
Don't be discouraged. You WILL get better -- don't say you won't -- you just need a confirmed diagnosis first, and it sounds like your doctor is working towards that goal. I think once you get that diagnosis, then you can figure out how to treat it; it's very hard to treat what you don't know you have.
Have you tried instant oatmeal? It always soothes my tummy, and in fact it seems to help me when I have an attack. I hate the stuff, but when I'm doubled over with cramps, I eat it anyway.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I have been trying the diet, but haven't been able to eat much. So far just bananas, potatoes, and noodles are the only thing I have found that makes me semi solid. Anything else and I am all water. I haven't tried Acacia, because I can't find it anywhere.
The problem I am having now is I'm unsure if I should go ahead and take the Cipro. The Doc asked what I wanted to do, and now I feel like I made the wrong choice of choosing the Cipro over the anxiety medicine. Not much help when the doc asks which I wanna take. I feel it should be his professional choice than it is mine to chose the best medicine to try next.

You buy the acacia from Heather. Go to the "Shop for IBS" link at the top; you'll find it there.
I'd give the Cipro a try. Like I said, it's the only one that doesn't bother me.
As for the anxiety, have you considered hypnosis? Check out the hypnosis board above. A lot of us have gone through this, and it's helped us IMMENSELY. I know it totally got rid of my anxiety. You'll find our success stories in that board. You can order the CDs online and do the program at home. It's a 100-day program that's extremely successful.
Check it out.
