Hmmm...could this explain my D streak, nausea, really evil stomach cramps since I started Nexium???

Weird. All I know is I feel pretty sick.

When I took Prevacid for the first few months it didn't bother me but boy I sure had terrible D after that. The sad thing was that the doc didn't take me off of it. I found out myself about the D problem and quit taking it on my own. My acid reflux isn't that serious of a problem that I'm willing to have D instead!!

I wish I didn't have to take this Nexium.....but I'm like Kate. She once said that if she didn't take Nexium, everyday would involve vomiting. And I'm like that, now. I cannot live without the Nexium. I tried to stay off of PPI's for months......My health quickly declined...And I finally got to the point where I couldn't even eat crackers without being VIOLENTLY ILL!!! It is horrible. I am only going to stay on it until the reflux heals and then I will come off of it, but who's to say how long that's going to be???

It sucks...

I hate it that you're going through this! When I saw the article the first thing I thot was It's not fair, they find help for one symptom, and it increase the severity and violence of another!!

HUGS to you, and I hope this nasty effect tapers off...

I don't see them on the board. Is it just these three or does it include all of them. Any of the PPI's that decrease stomach acid?? I'm confused....

From what I have been able to tell, pretty much all of them have D as a potential side effect. That doesn't necessarily mean that it WILL be a side effect for a particular person since everyone's system is so different. I guess it's just a trial and error thing to find out what works best with the fewest side effects.

What symptoms does it help you with? I'm very leery of this drug and have only taken one in the past 1 1/2 month.

Everyone is going to want to switch to Protonix and Aciphex because they're the only two not being advertised. Makes me wanna switch, too! I bet they get sued for not generalizing it to PPI's...instead of only listing 3 of them. ?????

MY doctor will not give this to me. He said "it didn't work" and just straight up told me "NO" when I told him I wanted to try it. Why wouldn't he give this to me?? Is is addictive or is it just that crappy that he didn't even want to mess with me trying it because he KNEW I would be back for something else. I don't get it.....

Quitting Nexium new

Well, here's my strategy.

I've ceased to take Nexium recently. I cannot deal with some of the side effects.

I will self-medicate as necessary in the meantime. I expect some degree of "haywire." I will just deal with it/live with it.

I note that I have been feeling worse versus better after many months on the drug. It was an effective PPI for about 6 weeks. Perhaps the side effects are accumulative with me.

I've had enough cramping, excruciating back pain, stomach distention, nausea. It doesn't stop me from vomitting. Yes, it suppresses acid, but didn't do mcuh for the vomitting.

Having stopped the drug this past week, I note a reduction in the stomach distention. I have less D. I still have cramping/nausea. My lower back pain is reduced.

So, in effect, NO MORE PURPLE PILL for me. I'll just grin & bear it, self-medicate, and practice ultra-safe eating & common sense.

Kate.

Librax is a combination of an anti-spasmodic and the tranquilizer Librium. It is VERY addictive because of the Librium. When my GI doc switched me to it a couple of years ago, the pharmacist was surprised. He told me how much stronger it was than the Levbid I had been taking for years. I don't really have the C problems with it like I did in the beginning. I think a lot of that has to do with my gallbladder surgery though. I guess I say all that to confirm that Librax is not a drug to mess around with...it seems to be the drug of last resort. You have to be VERY careful when you decide to go off of it.

It takes a long time to see improvement! I didn't start seeing improvement for a month and I've been using it just about 6 weeks now and I'm still seeing little improvement. It takes like 2 months for it to start working really good, I think.

The side effects of coming "down" off of it is bad, huh?? No wonder why my doc won't give it to me. I guess I can't take it anyway if it's true you can't take it with a hiatal hernia. I don't know if that's true.....just what I read, today on the internet.

Sorry! I don't want to start any issues!

I AM NOT IMPLYING THAT THEY WILL GET SUED! It's just a thought. If everyone switches to one of the ones not listed i.e. Aciphex and Protonix, then the makers of Prilosec, Prevacid and Nexium would lose sales. That's all I'm saying. Prilosec OTC is like #1, Nexium is a big seller.....but I have protonix in my pantry and it's not on the list. Makes me want to switch, regardless. It's not on the list.....even though it might still cause the same problem. Know what I mean??? It's a psychological thing.

I've been on Aciphex for several months and I love it. It doesn't make my D worse at all and, in fact, it isn't even listed as a side effect. The other PPIs just killed me, with Nexium being the worst. I don't know how I'm going to go off it when I start trying for a baby.

Why do so many people with IBS have GERD? Is it because my stomach got mad at me because it was always so empty and decided to journey north in search of a better life?

That's what I'm thinking, too! My tummy is mad!!

I have never tried Aciphex. I have been on all of them so far except for aciphex and I like Nexium the best. I don't have any of the side effects at all. Not even the D, I don't think. Well, it was the same before I started taking it as it is now.....I had horrible side effects from Prevacid, Prilosec, Protonix and Prevacid. They ALL made me nauseated!! I couldn't even eat after I took the pill, it was so bad.....HORRIBLE!

But, I'm glad that Aciphex works for you. I have thought about the same thing......trying to come off of it to have a baby. One of my friends also has a hiatal hernia like me, and she has been pregnant 3 times now and couldn't come off the Prilosec. She has had 2 very rough pregnancies and lost her 2nd baby a week after it was born. So, I don't know if it was the Prilosec or not. The doctors, of course, say that it's not the drugs. I don't know....

Good Luck!!!

My GI doctor was shocked when he saw the reflux meds my GP put me on, and took me off right away. Almost immediately, I started to feel better.
I am terrified of reflux meds now!

Cheers,

Hi Jen, A little mentioned fact is that IBS is a disease of
the whole digestive tract, that's why it's very common for
IBS'ers to have GERD. In fact, everybody that I know that
has IBS where I live also have GERD too. I wouldn't be
surprised if more than 80% of IBS'ers have it. -Bob
