Just curious if anyone else finds that they are alwasys tired in conjuction w/IBS. I don't have CFS because I'm not that severely tired. I just find that i'm always kind of drowsy and require a lot of sleep on a normal basis. In spite of exercise/vitamins/eliminating stress and all that good stuff- i'm always very low on energy. I have chalked it up to the stress that my body is always under fighting to digest that food! Has anyone else had a similar experience. Not looking for suggestions, just want to know if this is common???

ME TOO!!!!

I swear I'm going crazy. At times I have NO energy. It's not tiredness...just no energy!!!

Have you ever had thyroid issues? You may want to get that checked. I had mine out last year and when I did, that's when all my problems started....

Let me know!

I've had my thyroid checked and it is always normal. Can you tell me more about what happened w/yours? Why did they remove it and what probs started then? Thanks!

I had a huge multinodular goiter and it was choking me.

My test now is "normal" but I don't buy it. I had a hard time adjusting to the drugs but I never returned to where I was. I still feel sluggish and like I'm moving under water a lot. That was 8/04 and I haven't felt the same since. I was dx w/ IBS 1/05. My eating fell apart right after the thyroid came out and has never gone away.

Yeah, I have fatigue problems. A full time job plus a couple of workouts a week is about my limit of what I can do.

I've gotten a little better by stabilizing my IBS and getting enough salt in my diet so my blood pressure stays up, but I'll never be confused with Superwoman. And, of course, I feel lots better when I accept this and not wonder why I couldn't hold down two jobs or do lots of cooking or volunteering or whatever. When I treat myself as I want to be treated - lots of sleep and leisurely reading - I don't feel quite so fatigued.

I just learned of an alternative way to test for hypothyroidism than the usual blood tests. The naturopathic doctor I just started seeing recommended taking my basal body temperature for five days, starting on the second day of your period. To take the temperature, put a mercury thermometer in your armpit for 10 minutes before you get out of bed in the morning or engage in any activity. If your temperature is consistently below 97.2, you may be hypothyroid.

This method of testing may not be recognized as valid by regular medical doctors. It might be something to investigate, though.

I couldn't sleep last night because of all the trapped gas that I had. It was upsetting my stomach really bad and by the time I got my stomach to settle down, I ate again and I'm just drained. My body does use so much energy just to digest food right now, that I just can hardly function right now. It's really sad.....
Hope you feel better soon~

Like you, SALT really impacts my energy level. Sometimes I literally sit there and use a FRIGHTENING quantity of SALT. I'm even "prescribed" by my M.D. to take a tsp. of table salt 3 times per day. Weird, but there is a salt connection.

C or D can zap the life out of anyone, too. I find that salt plays a role in my stability.

I have the same issue. I feel like I'm on some sort of motor/energy depressant. To me, it feels like a chemical has been released in my body...maybe a response to the cramping etc? I really want to understand this symptom better. Initially I thought that maybe I had Chronic Fatigue. When I got my diagnosis last year for IBS, I had gone to my doctor thinking that was what I had because the fatigue was so debilitating.

Since you have your thyroid removed are you taking Synthroid or ?? if so, does the Dr. check your dosage amount? This is one tricky calculation to stabilize the amount of medicine you need.

Synthroid. Doc regularly checks the levels.
And they claim I'm stable.

Whatever.

Actually.... yeah. It's at its worst when I'm having attack days. So much so that after I have a BM, I want nothing more than to go lay down I just feel sooooo drained. When I'm not flaring, I know I've got mroe energy. But on those attack days...

That's really interesting. I often crave salt, too. But I never connected it with IBS. I always just thought that it was from working out so much that my body craves so much salt (meat, too).

As far as fatigue goes, I'm having one of those days, too. My depression has been pretty bad today and all I feel like doing is sleeping and staying in my room in bed. I've actually had to force myself today to get up and eat.

The salt thing isn't directly connected with IBS - I think it's part of a larger constellation that includes IBS, low blood pressure, fibro, sun/heat sensitivity, fatigue, etc. There seem to be lots of people here with several of these things in various combinations, so my hypothesis is that there's some common root.

The doc who told me to eat more salt in the summer said that my low blood pressure wasn't the cause of my fatigue, but that it was related. He said that I had the same thing that the Victorians called "the vapors" and that I really shouldn't try to have an ultra-busy life. In the 12 or so years since, I've found that he's mostly correct: I can do a lot if I can do it at my own speed and not feel obligated to be like the people with 60 hour/week jobs and/or a busy home life.

This is a very interesting discussion! I, too, suffer chronically from fatigue and I, too, love salt! I am embarrased to say I put way too much salt on my dinner. I always thought it was because everything I eat has no taste, but perhaps I am actually craving it! I also have low blood pressure, an affliction I am told that many petite ladies have (and at 4-foot-8 1/2 I am definitely "petite").

In terms of my fatigue, it doesn't seem to stop me from leading a fast-paced life, including a very busy career and personal life. I guess I've just learned to ignore my fatigue having suffered from it for most of my life. However, I admit to taking small cat naps during the day ... in particular, on the subway to and from work. Fortunately, I always wake up in time for my stop... well, almost always...

Wow, I thought I was the only one who was tired all the time. It's gotten so bad in fact that I was wondering if I was slipping into depression. I never seem to have the energy to do the things I used to love doing like shopping & gardening. I've even come close to falling asleep in the car on the way home! I'm not even that constipated anymore. I have a BM almost every day or every other day but I've always got that rumbling in my stomach & as soon as I eat, no matter what I eat, I've got gas & bloating. This is so depressing. I'm on the verge of tears all the time because of my stupid stomach & no matter what I do I never seem to feel like my old self anymore.
Does anyone else get the "rumbles" & gas all day even if they've had a BM?

Actually I'd say from your post that a-d's might be just what you need! IBS has so many mind-gut links that alot of us need some help at some time or other to get our neurotransmitter levels back on track. A-d's can really help you cope with the IBS...and also help the IBS!

I'm IBS-C, and I was rumbly all the friggin' time until I started taking a SFS (soluble fiber supplement) and making sure I got SF at every meal. It was the first of my symptoms to be fixed by Heather's diet - within 2 days I was marveling at the brand-new sensation of not being aware of my gut even when I felt good!

So if you're not taking a SFS, try one! I started with Citrucel, and now I'm taking acacia (1 heaping tablespoon twice a day). I had fine luck with the Citrucel, but I got tired of the orange goopiness and wanted to get more SF for my buck.

I am taking acaia but I'm only up to 1 tablespoon in the mornings with my banana smoothie. I guess I'll try to increase it slowly. Thanks for the help.
This is soooooooo hard on me lately!!

Meryl- I too am tired a lot. I get plenty of sleep, but I just don't have any energy during the day. It's awful. I also have a BM every day, but always have rumbling and gas all day. I'm afraid to go to work and class because the worst of my gas is always for about 3 hours in the late afternoon/early evening and I'm never home at that time. It is very depressing. I was just having myself a cry over it. At least I am not alone.
