It figures! The one form of birth control that doesn't give me insane side effects, and that I'm confident using because it isn't affected by D attacks, could give me a stroke. LOL!! It's like the universe is begging me to get pregnant, I swear.

I wonder, though, if the women who had clots and strokes and things like that were smokers. *All* hormone birth control isn't supposed to be used by smokers, because it increases your risk of those two things, but everyone uses it anyway. The article didn't mention that, so you gotta wonder.

If the only news source is Faux News, I would be a bit skeptical. See if it shows up in other news sources and/or see if you can find out the methodology. I would not put it past the folks agitating against birth control to come up with a ill-designed study made to scare us away....

Personally, I'm going to look into NuvaRing before my next gyn appointment. The pill doesn't cause me to have horrid side effects, but I still feel cruddy during my off week.

I was going to add that I trust Fox News about as far as I can throw a computer, but hey. Heh. I'll do my research. And I'm not terribly concerned in the first place... as far as I'm concerned, no hormone birth control is exactly GOOD, but it's a necessary evil.

I was thinking about switching from the patch anyway, but because it's not sticking very well. I have a prescription for Alesse that I've never gotten filled, so I may try that next. I was on OrthoCyclen, and that was a nightmare - not just on weeks off, but all the time. It seriously made me psychotic.

I have a couple friends who just LOVE their NuvaRings. It's a good option.

Yeah, this is the only bc method that's really worked well for me too... I love the patch! But not if it's going to give me blood clots or a stroke! Yikes. Yeah, no hormonal birth control is really *good*, I'm just wondering now how bad the risk is here (I'm not a smoker so that probably greatly lessens it...). Do you think you're going to switch, Casey?

And I *could* google this, but what's a NuvaRing? I've never heard of it before...

Hi Laurel,

The Nuva Ring is a small (about 2" diameter), flexible ring worn in the vagina. The hormones are absorbed into your bloodstream. You wear it for 3 weeks, then take it out for 1 week so you can get your period. I have been using it for 2 months and LOVE it. Neither my partner or I feel it. You can find more info at www.nuvaring.com Hope this helps!

than the news sources... it's still kind of vague, but that's most likely because *one study* doesn't really prove anything anyway.

In general, a woman may be at higher risk for getting side effects if she takes higher doses of estrogen. However, it is not known if a woman using the Ortho Evra patch is at higher risk for serious side effects than if she is using a typical birth control pill.
