what is papaya supposed to feel/look like when you buy it at the store? I got one the other day, prob more on the harder side than soft, and it tasted terrible. I guess it needed to be softer? Does it really help gas and bloating? That would be WONDERFUL. What about dried papaya- does it help the same way? I always thought that dried friut gave me more gas than regular fruit- anyone find that? Always wondered why that was...

If I recall, papaya should give a little when you press on it. Not mushy at all, but a little soft. I haven't noticed if it helps with gas/bloating, but it's a nice change when I get tired of apple sauce.

I haven't had MY FAVOURITE TREAT, papaya, in ages! Must put it on my list, lol!

A papaya that's good usually smells good and yields to finger pressure. The outer skin is usually bright versus dark green--more yellow/spotted, I suppose?

Does it help with bloating? I'm not sure! All I know is that it is one of the most tummy soothing foods. Wonderful for when you're feeling crampy/spazzy. I've had days when I've eaten a whole large papaya over the whole day! It's fabulous pureed.

Unsulfured organic dried papaya is a great treat. Ditto for mango!

I don't know about its bloating-reducing quality myself, that's just what I've read. I was hoping someone would have said it worked for them that way, but guess its still worth a try.
Do y'all find that dried fruit gives you more gas than regular fruit, or is that juust a myth?
Thanks!

It REALLY REALLY makes me go-go-go. Only raisons give me gas, but I detest them and will never eat them ever again.

the thing with dried fruit is that it's more concentrated that fresh fruit, so it's easier to eat more - you can esily eat the equivalent of several whole fruits, and much more quickly than you could eat four fresh pears, too.

Indeed, dried fruit is HIGHLY concentrated nutrition. Great energy snacks!

Hi Budahbelly, Instead of eating papayas, you might want to
try drinking papaya juice. I drink this stuff made by Ceres,
some South African company. I find it helps settle my stomach
and helps a lot with my burping. I actually get it from a
local grocery store, so you should be able to also. -Bob

i actually find it *less* filling, and that's where i run into problems - since it doesn't have the water content of fresh fruit, i can eat more of it more quickly, and then the stomach problems come.

It's definitely IMPORTANT to drink lots of water with the dehydrated fruit or else, well...cramps/D/pain, etc.!

Nature's candy, lol!

It (papaya) contains an enzyme, papain, which is reportedly good for digestion.

Certain fruits have beneficial enzymes when eaten raw: banana, papaya, avocado, mango, and pineapple.

...also add that it's good for digestion over all, and not specifically for gas and bloating. It might help those problems for a person, but it might not.

It's specifically good for protein digestion, from what I've read.

I just love the stuff. I've had crappy days where I've eaten a whole big papaya over the day and just felt better.

It's great if you've got arthritis/sore joints/back pain.

Papacin is an enzyme that breaks things down and can be used as a meat tenderizer (its in no name steaks) and can also be used in great quantities to induce abortion (in great quantities) but this does not mean it will do anything for gas and bloating. There is a big difference between safe foods and healing foods. When I started the diet I thought safe foods would make me better. So I just wanted to mention that papaya is not a miracle food but will be safe for most people. (One time when I had bad D from Correctol I had papaya for the first time and it came out minutes later in the same form and color. It took me awhile to try it again.)

It's listed under Heather's soluble fiber foods. She says "Papayas (also digestive aids that relieve gas and indigestion)". Bloating is a symptom of indigestion, so I guess it would help with that also. I've never eaten one so I wouldn't know myself.
