can brown fruit make you sick?

I have been eating unpeeled nectarines all summer and thought they'd be a safe source of IF since they are low in fructose and the peel is thin.

Now that it's getting colder, the nectarines are rare. I still buy them at Trader Joes, but by the time they are soft enough to eat, they are brown inside. I can handle the taste, but I'm worried that this may make me have worse tummy problems if the fruit is considered "rotten".

What do you guys think? If I can handle the taste, is it okay to eat a nectarine that is brown inside? Or does this give off some harmful bacteria or other problems/gases that might cause a tummy ache?

As I bite into my brown nectarine at lunch!

Maybe I should just be brave and try an unpeeled apple!

I just finished one up! I've been eating them all week! I better throw them all out. They look perfect on the outside. Do you really think they cause chemicals to be released that may cause me trouble problems?

I think what you're eating falls into the category of "overripe", not "rotten". Overripe is pretty much the ONLY way I eat my fruit, and it's never bothered me one way or the other. Then again, you mentioned being able to handle the taste... if the taste is off, it might be starting to turn, and I'd chuck it.

Personally, I think you should try the unpeeled apples, and maybe grapes - I've been able to get those reliably good and fresh at the grocery store - but that's just me.

As long as it's not blue or "foaming" it should be okay.

Like Casey, I like "brown" fruit or rather REALLY RIPE, soft fruit. I wait for it to brown--it makes it more digestible for me in it's natural state.

Does the "brown" you referred to re: fruit mean bruised? Bruised should not be a problem.

The browner the banana skin, the yummier they are, to me.
I wait for apples to yellow, for pears to get closer to liquification. I wait for them to distinctly smell like themselves, to "oxydize."

But foaming and blue is not a good thing.

I guess fruit generally ends up "brown" anyways, unless you've been eating alot of orange foods or red foods.

Kate, IBS-D.

Well, my taste buds aren't too reliable. I once ate liverwerst and didn't notice until it was finshed that it had green mold on it!

So, I still don't know if I should just chuck them. They look so normal on the outside, but the inside is all brown. Someone told me this could be sign that they were frozen at some time during delivery.

I havn't built up the nerve for apples yet...and certainly not grapes! Those are pretty rough, aren't they?

What fruits do others (especially C folks) eat during the fall/winter months? My doctor told me to avoid bananas.

Just make them soluble by peeling. I love poaching them!
Pear sauce is outstanding, too (same idea as applesauce).

Ooooh...those Asian pears are sososososo good poached!

(tons of sf, too!)

Flaming pears, indeed.

...so peeling would kill the purpose. Do you know if there is still a good amount of IF in peeled pears or fruits? I need a winter fruit that is safe but also high in IF. The nectarines were good because the peel was so thin...easier to digest!

What about berries Beth? Okay, they're not a winter fruit, but I get bags of frozen berries and them mix them in with my oatmeal before microwaving it. The berries go all mushy, hence minimising the IF's bad effects and they're safe enough for me in the oatmeal, whilst being a great source of IF.

Well...

Sometimes pears still make me bloated. But I have interesting news: interstitial cystitis causes bloating! So I can eat this diet correctly and STILL bloat like crazy if I am not IC healthy So you may not want to compare

Pears WITH the peel are the way I've been eating them. And like I said I can still get gassy or bloated. Now that you mention it though, I usually eat em' without having soluble fiber fiber 1st...

Beth, I'm just no help today

You know what? I need more IF! I will have some SF later today and some pear afterwards and let you know how the bloating goes...

*big hugs* i missed you too!

Another way to get some fruit in:

Canned fruit at lunchtime.

If that doesn't work for some reason...try a BITE of a pear with the peel. Do this for a few days. If it works, add half a pear and so on (after SF). Do this with any fruit that doesn't have seeds

Btw have you tried peeled grapes? All you do is open it up and eat the inside. I've seen mother's do this with babies!! (They scoop out the inside for the baby...not newborns though!) If you get used to eating a fruit as only a SF it might be easier on your tummy to accept it as an IF later on...just a thought?

Beth...you're doing super! Keep asking...we're gonna get you stable!

I've actually found that I'm fine with ripe Conference pears (there's not alot of choice at the supermarket!) with the skin on. Even without SF first as long as my tum's not empty. And apples kille me so there must be something easier about pears - I think the skin's thinner actually.

So maybe give them a try?

...that was for "regular" folks too (NON-IBSers) and it asked if you felt bloated and or gassy after eating pears. So this happens to even non ibsers. Apparently, pears are one of the highest fructose level fruits, along with apples.

It suggested that you cook the pear in order to reduce the bloat factor because it helps break down the fructose. But what a pain to bake a pear instead of just throwing one in your lunch bag! I wonder if you can even bake a pear with the skin. I suppose so.

and she said the same thing. That pears would be easier on the tummy than apples because they are less acidic.

Hmmm, never heard of conference pears! I love Bartlett pears. I think I may just be brave and give them a try! The high fructose level scares me off though. I know fructose can cause major problems with bloat/gas. But your fine with them, really?

it's almost been a year since I registered! I can't believe you guys are all still so patient with me. I'm one difficult IBS case to figure out.

Thank you all for hanging in with me and answering my never ending questions. I don't know what I would do if you guys gave up on me! Please stick with me....I want stability so badly....but as time goes by, so do my hopes for ever having a life without pain and IBS.

Oh, the canned fruits don't have enough fiber in them, and they are low in IF I would guess. And grapes without skins would probably be low in IF too. I know what you mean about starting out by making the fruit SF first and working into IF, but I think I've gone through that stage already and my body needs some IF for the C!

Your so sweet to keep helping! If you come up with any other ideas, please share. You input helps me more than you give yourself credit for!

Lol! Pears really really really make me poop, too!!! Raw pears make me hugely gassy...cooked pears don't give me gas at all.

Poaching a pear is so easy--just peel, halve, core, and immerse in a liquid of choice (WINE rocks for this), juice (something tart rocks, too), sweetened tea, whatever and cook/stew. Asian Pears are really good cooked in green tea with brown sugar or honey...use a little lemon, as well. Toss in cinnamon, cloves, cardamon...use your imagination.
I'll dig up a recipe and post it.

Pears are divine roasted in the oven. The natural sugars carmelize.

Add a little cornstarch or arrowroot and you have a glorious
thick sauce/syrup.

Of course, the sugar stuff is optional. There's stevia, as well, I suppose. My favourite way, though, is to do it in wine when I have people over for dessert.

Don't laugh, but I generally prefer to roast them in the oven and not worry about paying attention/monitoring them. Just put dessert in with dinner!!! MUCH MUCH MUCH easier than pie, and probably healthier, too.

Voila, enjoy.

Kate, IBS-D.

Raw pears will generally give me gas.

Cooked pears don't.

Pear Sauce is wonderful--same idea as applesauce. No gas (at least for me)what-so-ever.

You can cook with the skin on. Although...cooking really loosens the skin.

That's another thing I can tolerate - after SF tho.

It's amazing how much fruit and veg I can now eat. When I first started on the diet, the tiniest bit of unsafe IF or high levels of it made me so ill.

Yes, definitely REALLY ripe and SOFT and juicy and melt in your mouth/tummy/pants???--otherwise GAS CITY and D!!! Not a good thing. Hard pears--really bad thing. That's like eating raw potatoes. Not as bad as eating raw macaroni, though.

I wish they made them without adding the extra sugar. I do use frozen berries that are non-sweetened. Not as much fiber as the dried, but much less sugar!

I think adding more than 20 grams of sugar to a product is too much! I personally try to limit my sugar intake. Fruit is sweet enough with it's own natural sugar.
