Okay, I found this article by the IFFGD (Internation Foundation for Functional Gastro Disorders). Very, very reputable and well known foundation.

According to this article, Laxatives are now considered safe for constipation without being habit forming or dangerous. Here's the link. IFFGD

What do you guys think? Is Aloe, cascara, or senna okay for us? Is it okay to use MOM everyday?

I just read the article and I believe they are referring to people with occasional constipation, not people w/IBS-C. There is a huge difference. One of the first gastros I saw told me to take Senekot(which is Senna)every night. I was on it for about 21/2 years. It works, if I took 2 before bed, I would have a BM the next morning. If I didn't take it, I would not have a BM. It causes terrible cramping (like we need more!) and leaves you feeling sick to your stomach after you have had a BM. Laxatives are not good for people with IBS - plain and simple. If laxatives weren't addictive or dangerous we would have a cure for IBS-C'ers.

Hi Beth, I would agree with them that they are safe, however
aloe and senna can be very harsh! I bought this "Colonix" kit
back in May, and tried one cup of their senna tea. Talk about
big time cramps! I had nearly uncontrolable D the whole day,
and felt like total crap that one day. It did clean me out,
but it was like prepping for a colonoscopy, not much fun .

...if not senna and aloe? These certainly seem safer than Ex-Lax or something like that.

I tried senna a few times, and Casagrada too...and both worked wonderfully and gentle too! I just stopped taking them because I was scared about the habit forming and the potential damage.

I wish this article went more into detail about what type of stimulant laxatives they were talking about. You think the senna and aloe would be included in the safe category, even though you had a hard time with Senna...because I loved the Senna and Casagrada! I would love to use these more often!

Did they ever work out whether you had CC? Cos if you did, then senna would be great.

What is CC and why would senna be okay for that but not IBS-C?

So far, no doctor will tell me what I have!

CC = Chronic Constipation. It, like STC, is one of the many things that doctors now think some people have that have been misdiagnosed with IBS-C.

And b/c if you have either of those you don't neccessarily have the IBS, laxatives are much safer to take.

Beth, Osmotic laxatives like MOM and Miralax would certainly
be safe. However, if you had no problems with senna or casa-
grada, then by all means try them again. Especially if they
were doing a good job for you. -Bob

Now do NOT ask me how that differs from chronic constipation! I just know that it's something that they're now discovering some people who had been diagnosed with IBS-C actually have.

have you tried a laxative or aloe or anything?

I tried aloe as it is good for inflimmation (which I have with my interstitial cystitis). It seemed to help my BM but it made my GERDS worse

Anyhow, just wondering if you ever tried anything and if you know if you have STC or CC?

*hugs*

Thanks for asking. Unfortunately, I still have no clue what I "really" have. No doctor will give me a diagnosis. And they haven't done any test to find out, like a sitz marker test. It seems like they just treat all Constipation the same way...which is just saying to eat more fiber and exercise. Doctors are not my friend. Not one doctor thinks foods have any effect on IBS or tummies...except to say that fiber is suppose to help C. I've been asked more than once why I don't drink milk or eat yogurt...this is by GI doctors who supposedly know about IBS....or whatever the heck I have.

I want a firm diagnosis, one way or another!

I have not tried a laxative or aloe. I did try Cascara Sagrada (sp?) a few times as well as senna and mineral oil and all gave temporary relief. But I don't trust them for long term use, because I don't know if I have chronic C or IBS for sure.

Why won't any doctor test for this or tell me? My "gut" tells me I have IBS because I get spasms, bloat (even when not C), gas, and occasional, like once a month. I am a mystery. The last doc refused to even look at me and said I needed to go to Mayo to figure it all out: the slight delayed gastric emptying, the non functioning gallbladder, the gluten antibodies, the motility problems, the pain....

I can't afford that.

Right now I am trying Miralax and Acacia, but switching to Benefiber because I'm out of Acacia.

How are you doing with the IBS? You still not taking a SFS? How do you keep from being C without one? How is the gluten diet treating you?

*hugs*
