what does fennel taste like?

i do not think i have ever had it, i know i have heard of fennel seeds, but i went looking in the stores in the spice section and could not find any.
i do not want to make a large $ investment in the tea or tea bags without knowing what it tastes like.

But not a real strong licorice, at least to me. I'm not a big licorice candy fan (ugh, don't get me started on the friends and family who love salty black licorice!), but I like fennel. If you've ever been to an Indian or Pakistani restaurant, the candy-coated seeds they serve at the end of the meal (or at the cash register  ) are fennel. If you know what anise tastes like, it's pretty much like fennel.
