I have tried, unsuccessfully, to explain to my Gastro how pronounced my bloating is at times. About 3-4 times a month, after dinner (though no common food trigger), my abdomen from my pelvis up into my ribcage swells to the point that my clothes are tight. It swells more than I can reproduce by poking my stomach out. Does this sound like a familiar symptom of IBS? I have scanned the net, but can't determine whether this amount of "bloat" is common.
sincere thanks for any replies.

Have you tried taking some photos of yourself when this happens and showing them to your doctor? I don't know if it would help.
Severe bloat is very common with IBS: IBS Symptoms . Have you read the Bloating info section of the site? Fennel tea has been quite helpful for me when it comes to bloating, although I don't think I experience bloating as severe as yours or as some of the other folks on the boards.
Oh, and welcome to the boards!

I have the same problem. Around the same time of day, too. There have been times when the bloating is so bad that my breathing becomes labored and sometimes painful.

Yup, this is common. Have you tried fennel tea, a gentle SFS, eating smaller meals more frequently, only ever slowly sipping drinks and yoga?

Yes, That is my next tactic - to take a picture. I did read the section on bloating, but I wasn't sure if it was common for folks with IBS to have it so severely. It seems odd to me that the swelling extends into my upper abdomen. Like Lynx, my abdomen swells and presses on my ribcage to the point that it effects my breathing.
Thank you for your patience. I am new to this and still trying to figure out all the nuances of IBS

Along with fennel tea, I use a heating pad and the hypno CDs to fight my bloating when it occurs. At times, it's bad enough to keep me hunched over while walking and make my bra feel too tight! Also, I tend to get bloated if I don't have anything to drink for a few hours in the evening, so having an evening cup of tea of any sort is a good preventative measure for me.

I have absolutely had bloating that severe- all the time. It is probably the WORST symptom of all. I get it the same as you- my abdomen is distended all the way up to my sternum to the point I can barely breath. The doctors absolutely DON"T get it. And it's true, there's no way you could force your stomach to stick out that far even if you tried. It's agonizing, but I think normal for a lot of us IBS'ers

No, no D. Truth is, I NEVER get D. But I am often if not always constipated. However the bloating doesn't seem to match up with any pattern of BMs. I do find that a nice heat compress does wonders
