Waking up at night with pain and lots of D

Hi, I have known I have IBS-D since Feb. Always always have a attack if I eat a trigger food very quickly. I follow a strict diet and stay away from trigger foods but sometimes a safe food will get me, baked lays, etc. Anyway for a week now I wake up at three and have lots of D and it goes on until my lomotil kicks in. The guidelines say you should never wake up with this right? No change in life or meds. Any ideas? My gastro says I am his worst case but maybe it is something else. Yes, I had all the tests and them some. Thanks for any feedback. As of today I am on fat free crackers and hope it is just a flare up.

I'm sorry you're going through this! Have you tried taking a couple Imodium at bedtime? It's not as strong as Lomotil, but I remember having some side effects when I took Lomotil.
It's not usual for IBSers to get D during the night, but it CAN happen and if you've had all the tests then I would consider something in your diet, a supplement, or medication - especially since the attacks seem to be happening regularly. Otherwise, if just happened once in a while, I would say it's just those random, unexplainable IBS attacks.
I'm wondering about the kind of SFS you're taking. Are you still taking Citrucel? Some of the inactive ingredients might be affecting you: the citric acid in the orange powder might be a problem and potassium citrate can cause loose stools. I've tried Citrucel before and found it to be too harsh for my D. I've had better luck with the powder form of Benefiber.

Yes I bet you are right and it is just a random flare up. I still use Citrucel and have since Feb. I have to take Nexium because it causes acid reflux but it works so well. I read Nexum can cause D but I take it first thing in the am so that would not be the cause.

I have this too and I'm going back to the GI doc tomorrow at 1:30pm because I had the mother of all attacks on Sunday morning at 1:00am, and 3:00am and 6:00am. That is just not right. I wake up and get this gnawing pain that if I don't eat something right then, I will have an attack and I don't want to eat at 3:00am because it will trigger an attack, anyway.....well, I have the attack if I don't eat, too. I just don't know what it is, anymore. So, hopefully the doctor will get to the bottom of it. If I take a couple of Pepto it will eventually go away but the attack makes me really nauseous. More nauseous than D..if that makes any sense.

Please let me know what your doctor says about this. Do you take something to stop the D when it hits you at night? I take a lomotil but it takes awhile to kick in. Lisa

Well, I barely made it to the doctor today.....I had a bad attack, of course, 10 minutes before I was supposed to leave.....nausea, diarrhea, cramps.....Wow, I took a Levsin and somehow made it there without throwing up. He thinks that my IBS-D is now either Ulcerative Colitis or gallbladder disease and am scheduled to have a gallbladder stress-test because the ultrasound came out normal...(he doesn't think it's accurate) and I'm also scheduled to have an endoscopy and colonoscopy......Hopefully, one of these three tests will explain why I'm waking up in the middle of the night so sick......I will let ya know what happens! It sounds kind of scary!!
I haven't eaten anything today except for Pretzels and my stomach is sooo empty that it hurts!!

Let me know how your tests turn out. I have had all those test but I am pretty sure mine is IBS related but let me know what you learn and who knows the info could help. Hope you feel better soon. Lisa

Is it the same as a hida scan? Does it measure how well the gallbladder is functioning?

Yep, that's exactly it. He said that if my gallbladder is functioning at less than 37% he's going to take it out. He just had a lady in the hospital yesterday, having her's taken out because she passed the ultrasound like I did and failed the hida scan. I hope mine is okay!

HI there! I had a HIDA scan about a month ago and I was functioning at 6%-- so I had surgery 3 weeks ago and today I am feeling great! I suffered cramping and pain all of the time. I was mostly C, but some D. It was a miserable time. They misdiagnosed a wheeat allergy, but after the surgery I am able to eat almost anything-- so sometimes all of IBS symptoms can go away after a horrible gallbladder comes out! Just something positive to think about!!!
