Um, none? Butter should be avoided at all times. You could probably mist a little olive oil over it - I guess it depends what you are doing with the pasta. Are you eating it plain? Adding a sauce? Making a salad?

I use Smart Balance for all my butter needs, because it doesn't have dairy. For pasta, though I would reccomend a little olive oil.

Disagree that all butter is bad - I'm IBS-D and "LandOLakes"
Light Butter with Canola Oil Spread I tolerate well - recommend you try some.

I highly recommend Organic Earth Balance Buttery Spread. It is 100 per cent vegan (with no dairy and no additives) and is also gluton-free. It also tastes good! You can spread it on your bread, cook with it and bake with it.

It's available at Trader Joe's and health food stores in the U.S. and in health food stores, including Wholefoods, here in Canada.

Thanks! I am eating it plain, because I'm still unstable but I don't like it plain. All I have in the fridge is country crock so I guess I will resort so some olive oil until I get to the grocery store....
Thank you for your responses!

If you are still having IBS symptoms, then this product ("LandOLakes" Light Butter with Canola Oil Spread) may be contributing to your symptoms because it clearly contains milk products. (See ingredients at www.landolakes.com/products/ViewProduct.cfm?ProductID=15116)

Milk is a major trigger for IBS. Some people claim they can tolerate it, but it isn't a very good idea especially if you are still having symptoms.

There are quite a few non-dairy butter substitutes available that don't contain milk. Personally I would recommend trying those first. In all conscience, I can't recommend anything containing milk because it is contrary to Heather's diet and I believe generally not a good idea for IBS people.

Regular Smart Balance (Smart Balance® 67% Buttery Spread) does contain some dairy (whey); Smart Balance Light (Smart Balance® 37% Light Buttery Spread) does not contain any dairy derivatives. I use Smart Balance Light and I like it fine now that I'm use to it - I was using real butter pre-Heather, so it was a bit of a shock at first.

There's a current post about Parkay and it looks like some of the Parkay margarines may be dairy free, also.

I agree that butter is a bad idea - dairy is one of Heather's big four triggers.

I actually eat pasta sometimes with just a little garlic salt on it - it's surprisingly good.

So if it might not be your best choice. Fats are difficult for most IBSers. I'd stick with Smart Balance Light.

I can't believe it, this whole time, I was confused. I thought it was the Smart Balance regular that was safe and the Smart Balance Light that was bad. I guess it is a good thing I don't use butter often. I will have to put it on my shopping list for this weekend to actually buy the right one. Thanks for saving me!

I think a few others have suggested it as well. It is low in fat -- non-hydrogenated - and dairy free!

...as long as it's trigger free it's safer than any butter substitute as it's obviously lower fat! You should watch this atm as you're trying to be so careful.

Have you tried cooking it in some chicken bouillon? My daughter eats it that way a lot, and I've tasted it, and it's good. When we first started making it, she used to like margarine in it, but now she prefers some types of pasta without the margarine, just the broth and, of course, a little salt. It gives it a better flavor.

Have you tried low-fat trigger-free mayo or is it the eggy-ness of mayo in general that turns your tum?

And btw, in that case I'd go for the olive oil instead of butter sub. Measure it out in teaspoons so you don't use much, but you don't need to. Remember that as we don't have much fat in our diet we should try and make sure that as much of it as possible is good fats.

I can't ever seem to find a mayo (low fat or regular) that doesn't contain whole eggs. I got lucky, and found something called Vegenaise...I don't use mayo often, but when I do, it does the trick. Its a totally animal-product free substitute. Anyone ever try it? I think it actually is good, even though it creeps me out a bit...

Hmm, I'll have to check mine. I know I don't have a problem with egg per-se, so as long as the mayo's low-fat I'm okay (egg yolks are high-fat which is their biggest problem for us).

I just read the labels and saw eggs, so I assumed it was bad for me. So, we can't have eggs yolks because they are high in fat, so if they are used in a low fat enviorment (Lt. Mayo and other sauces), then they are ok?

...I think it's also the type of protein in egg yolks that *can* be a problem but I know for me it's only the high-fat bit that's the issue. So anything low-fat with whole eggs in is fine for me (with SF and in smallish quantities of course ).

It's just the taste of mayo all together that I don't like. I never have liked it, even as a child. So, I guess I will just resort to the chicken broth that was mentioned or the olive oil. I used olive oil yesterday and I did okay with it. However, today I have not been doing well at all. I cannot eat anything at all without triggering an attack. I ate oatmeal before bed last night and I felt good......but then this morning, I woke up sick and have been sick all day. Nauseous, BM's all day long (not D, though), just irritated colon all together!! Just a MINOR set-back.

I checked today at the grocery store and they have no Hellmanns there. I am going to have to look on base at their grocery store or maybe try Albertsons. I am sure that when I first go there, I saw it someplace!

Sorry to hear you had a poopy day. I hope it clears up quickly! I'm sure you'll be doing better really soon becauase you seem to be taking care of yourself really well and making good choices about food.

Take care!

I can't tolerate any fat at all (well, almost none).

Yet for some miraculous reason I can tolerate the Organic Earth Balance Buttery Spread just fine. Maybe it has to do with the fact it doesn't contain any trans-fat, whatever that means? Or maybe it's the fact it doesn't contain any additives, just natural (non-dairy) ingredients?

In any case, it's truly an anomaly (a very welcome anomaly) in my diet!

I highly recommend the Earth Balance spead also--it's yummy! Of course, since my husband runs a Whole Foods Market, I'm going to recommend buying it there, if you have one near you, and if you don't, go to their website www.wholefoods.com and start bugging them to open one near you. They're growing so fast as a company, everyone should have access to them!

I quite like the taste of Smart Balance Light and it's fairly safe to eat as the fats are balanced with Omega 3 and Omega 6. It doesn't have trans-fats or hydrogenated oils like some margarines.
