Yes, I'm able to eat beans in moderation, especially if I take Beano beforehand. Beans contain a lot of insoluble fiber, especially in the skins, so they should be eaten with caution. But they certainly are a good source of fiber!

Ok that is what happened last nite. We had no yolk noodles with tuna, soy cheese, and lima beans. I got very sick. But now I understand that beans are a problem.

Beans aren't a problem... they're insoluble fiber. You need insoluble fiber. However, you do have to keep in mind that they might have been a little too much insoluble fiber for your system at this point in time. Don't give up on them completely yet! They're good and good for you, and worth trying again when you're more stable.

I can eat them, by the way - any beans, cooked any way, without Beano or anything like that, as long as I have some soluble fiber with them. But then again, I'm stable. I couldn't eat beans at all for almost a year!

You didn't put any dairy products in your tuna-noodle creation from last night, did you? Or cream soups, or anything like that? Just making sure there's nothing else to blame.

Anyway, hope you're feeling better!

One thing too to remember, is that the more often you have beans, the easier it will be to digest them. I'd recommend starting off with easier to digest beans like lima beans, green beans, lentils, and hummus. When I first started trying to include beans, I could only eat a little bit of hummus, any more then that and I got an attack. Now that I'm stable, I can eat whatever beans I want..but it has taken me a long time of eating small amounts to get my stomach to tolerate them this well(plus being stable helps obviously). The beans that are harder to digest are kidney beans, black beans, and other large beans. Usually the smaller the more digestable.

I tried to eat lentils and thought I was going to die! But I started at a half cup serving I think. I loved them, but my body didn't I thought I would never be able to eat beans again.

But are you saying that if I start at 1 Tablespoon or so, and keep increasing, my body will learn to tolerate them and I won't hurt and get gas?

what do you eat/supplement with to be so stable? I'm a C too and not having much luck.

Hey, sorry I just saw this post and realized I never responded! I'd say start off with things like green beans and lima beans, not tons of them but maybe mixed in with other veggies(those big bags of mixed frozen veggies are good). See if you can eat them on a daily basis. Maybe later on try a tiny bit of hummus or fatfree refried beans. It took me a while to work my way into beans, so remember don't do it too fast!

To be as stable as I am now has taken awhile. What really helped was getting on a soluble fiber supplement that worked for me (Metamucil worked great, the others triggered symptoms), as well as cutting out whole grains (they're just too harsh for me, but some people tolerate them fine), and taking Colace. After many months I've able to become stable enough to stop the SFS and cut down on the Colace, I'm not "cured" or anything, but much better then before!

Hope you start doing better soon, remember to safetly and slowely add in insoluble fiber as long as you can tolerate it ok.
