Being a "C", I have gained weight following Heathers advice and the diet has not made a marked change in my lifestyle as I had identified my triggers long ago before I even knowing there was such a thing as IBS.

My stomach is blissfully "empty" right now as I am in the middle of a cleanse(that isn't bothering me thank goodness) and I feel wonderful. I have been "going" every day....yay....and feeling no discomfort from the cleanse.

This empty feeling is real similar to feeling hungry though not exactly the same. Could it be that somehow our bodies tell us we are hungry when we really aren't hungry but just empty? Understand that I am a former anorexic (more of a control issue that a feeling/looking fat issue) and my body is programmed to enjoy feeling empty.

We all know that most "D's" are thin for obvious reasons ...I was just curious as to how many "C's" have found themselves gaining weight since realizing they have IBS.

Your thoughts and/or experiences?

Poochibelly:

Yes, detoxing/cleansing is quite a "high" and a "total buzz."
I love the feeling, too and could stand to enjoy it until the end of my days. There is a difference, though, between feeling "cleaned out" and "knocked off your feet" with D.

Re: weight gain and ANY DIET. It's as simple as taking in excessive calories. To lose weight, your input must simply be less than your expenditure. So, it's not the diet that's to blame--or any diet, but rather personal choices and energetic "accounting." Simply decrease your input on a regular basis and you will lose weight. Do the math.

Kate.

I am not one who has ever taken in a great deal of calories, I am still thinner than the average bear. The amount of food I eat and excercise has not changed. I think the weight gain has to do with the "make up" of the suggested food in that the number of calories I eat has gone up thought the amount of food I eat has not...starches and stuff with lots of sugar are not my friend.

Not laying blame anywhere...that would be silly. Just wondering how others may be balancing the changes.

Then I must be weird for a D since I am overweight. I have been a stress eater for a while. I'm not doing that anymore though. I just started this diet, so I'll have to see how I do. I have to get the exercise in, which is hard due to an injury I have.

Again- calories in vs. calories out factor the weight gain. perhaps you should begin to monitor them a bit closer- make sure your getting enough protein to help with hunger along with those carbs and cutting out the sugary carbs maybe? just a suggestion.

just to note- I am IBS-C and im not overweight by anymeans. My mother is IBS-D and is very overweight.

I don't have any real thoughts on the matter, except to point out that I've been D-predominant my entire life, and I've also been obese for most of my life. I *wish* being a D'er made me automatically thin! Conversely, I know some C'ers who are very thin.

Actually, I did find that Heather's diet made me gain weight, but now that I'm eating more moderately and trying to be more active, I've stabilized at what is normal for me.

What makes you gain weight is eating more calories than you burn, NOT one specific diet over another.

I don't consume sugary carbs or even 'starchy' foods, for the record. I take in less than 1200 calories/day, easily...usually less than 1000. I predominantly only consume vegetables. Only recently have I added egg whites and some albecore tuna to my diet, simply because my bones grating against each other keeps me awake at night and it's getting quite painful to sleep. I'm hardly overweight. If anything, I have a protein phobia.

It's not just simply calories in minus calories out. The
calories in have to be absorbed by the small intestines.
People who's small intestines don't fully function properly
can eat a heck of a lot of calories and not gain weight.

I'm a D and I have been heavy nearly all my adult life - especially since IBS.
I have lost weight -- but it's only to a healthy weight... 128 - 132... I'm only 5 foot 1 -- so I'm not skin & bones by any stretch. It really is all about calories in vs calories out.
