This is the best PPI I've ever tried. I'm hooked. It works like a charm. I can't believe it. My only complaint is a mild headache for which I pop a couple Advil.

Kate, IBS-D.

long-term use of nexium or other ppi's can cause irreversible damage to the stomach and comprimise its ability to effectively digest food. there's a publication on it somewhere, but i can't remember the author. maybe try digestive enzymes and acidophilus as a safer alternative. contrary to popular belief, acid reflux is usually caused by too little acid in the stomach, not too much. just some food for thought

I appreciate your saying this, though I have to say I have been on Prilosec, and then Nexium for ten years now. I absolutely have to take the pill every day or I will throw up anything I eat (I've tried acidophilus, actually for yeast infections, but it did not counter the acid). Since I had a 24 hr PH test with a catheter down my throat for 24 hours recording the acid levels, I can say that my acid reflux is way too much acid in my stomach.

I think this is something a person and their doctor has to work out, but I would never want to scare someone away from a drug that is absolutely vital to my well being.

Yeah, the long-term complications of unstable GERDs are pretty horrific! Def something for each patient-doctor duo to decide on.

And probiotics did nada for me too.

I appreciate your candour. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one. I take drugs that totally mess up my gut and interfere with absorption/digestion anyways. Nexium and high potency enzymes--I don't have gastric juices--are working like magic! Losec wasn't potent enough. Ditto for Pariet. (Semi-effective, but only on high doses) If I don't take anything the likelihood of everything I consume being vomitted/regurgitated is about 80 percent. It's nice having some back teeth still available to dig into a salad. (great acid neutralizer) If I'm low on a vitamin, I get shots. Now, I can eat without the fear of things coming back to haunt me and acid killing my throat/esophagus.

Interesting comment re: probiotics. They haven't done anything for me either.

Thanks--I think this one is vital to my well-being, too.

Kate.
