I've noticed that alot of people have various types of IBS. I've seen C & D so far. What does this mean? 5 years ago I was simply told I have IBS.

(Granted, my doctor didn't do a very good job with this diagnosis because she told me there wasn't much I could do about my condition and I was to simple live with it. Essentially, I'm trying to educate myself now.)

C is for constipation and D is for diarrhea.

there are generally 3 kinds: C,D, and A. although i think on this board we've decided G is one too.

C = constipation
D = diherrea (can't spell today... is that right?)
A = alternating between C and D
G = gas

what letter you are is basically what your most common problem is. i'm A. i think the largest percentage is usually C but i can't tell you that for a fact, i just think i read that.

hope this all helps!

Beth et al - I'm the one who started the "g" for gas because I was having such a horrible time with it. It has now subsided quite a bit, but they keep sneaking up on me.

If you saw the post to Kimbo re WW Magazine article, I think they said that normal people "toot" between 14 and 23 times per day. Geez, that's what I was doing and I couldn't stand it (and neither could my husband!!). I don't think that's "normal". Normal for me is about 3-5 times a day. Anybody else care to chime in????

Hmmmm....gas factor and statistics....

Well, I have IBS-A and my husband has ulcerative colitis and I'd say our household averages about 5 each/day. Although on a bad day....I don't want to even think about it!

However, what I'm wondering is this - you know how if you can't release the gas and it accumulates...ahem...is that where a low number comes from? I mean if you are able to continually release pressure as it happens - that could account for the 15 times a day (little ones). I'm a teacher and I most certainly can't "toot" when I need to so I end up holding it in and the end result _has_ to be worse than the initial product...

I hope this comment wasn't too cryptic! I just don't want to offend anybody (even though I think its an important topic)

Along with the fun stomach bloating and painful cramping, I had the fun toxic and a lot of the times painful gas! Stomach constantly unsettled, always making loads of noise until I started the safe diet. I am still having a bit of a hard time figuring out if I am having a little trouble with some of my safe foods or if my nerves (constant worrying)are causing the unsettled stomach and gas from time to time. Sometimes it scares me, because I really don't want to go back to the way I used to feel!!

Sharon how long did it take you to get things in control more? You don't do well with oatmeal either do you? My problem is, I get so excited about cooking and start to get creative and then I don't know if it's the food I ate. I will say that I am really good about safe foods and haven't strayed to anything forbidden and it's been a month. Any advice for me?

Sheri - I'm still getting advice and you want me to give it????--JUST KIDDING!

Oatmeal and me get along just fine. Sorry I gave the impression that we didn't.

It took me a while because Heather and I were trying to figure out why I was getting a lot of gas right after dinner and all night (which sent my husband right into the guest room to sleep). We finally came to the conclusion that the 500 mg of vit c I was taking with dinner might be doing it (it's ascorbic acid and not very nice to one's system). The day I stopped taking it is when the gas started to calm down. Boy, it's a pain in the butt when you're at the grocery store and the gas wants to come out...and you find yourself looking up and down the aisle making sure no one else is there so you can get relief!!!!

Why do you worry so much? Didn't anybody ever tell you that it doesn't solve anything??? I know it's hard not to worry...I have a friend that's afraid of everything that I don't know how she gets through life. She's afraid to go for a walk because she'll fall. She's afraid when her husband gets on a ladder because he might fall off. But yet she's not afraid to drive a 30' long motor home. Go figure! Anyway, I know it's human nature to worry some, but try not to let it take over your life. Life is too precious to frit it away with thoughts of dread, fear, etc. Just make sure you're prepared for IBS when you leave the house. I have a neighbor that gets D with about 30 seconds warning so she keeps a change of clothes in the car, a pair of clean panties in her purse, and tries to be careful with food. She found she can't drink more than one drink because if she does, all hell breaks loose!

Do you keep a diary of what foods you eat? I do that because I've been following WW for almost 2 years and I'm so in the habit, that I just find myself doing it before I eat anything. Last night, I made some parmesan (soy) and breadcrumb crusted salmon (baked), a baked potato and a steamed artichoke. I forgot that the FF sour cream was regular dairy and I put it on my potato. So, by the time I was just about done eating, the gas started. ANd I still have it this morning. That'll teach me!!

Going to the grocery and health food store today and try to find soy sour cream so this won't happen again.

I'm glad you're getting creative with your cooking. It's better than going to a shrink, isn't it? That's how I feel about gardening too.

Another thought about worrying...keep yourself busy and don't give yourself time to worry. And if you're prepared and organized, your worrying should diminish (hopefully). Remember, FAILURE IS NEVER FATAL...IT'S COURAGE THAT COUNTS!

One other thought...you do take any vitamins or supplements that could be causing gas? Think about it and let me know.

Good luck with the diminishing worrying!!

Thanks Sharon! I have just always been a worrisome person since I was really little. Don't know why, but am working on that now. I don't worry like your friend does and not even close.

I guess it just gets frusterating things will be going good and then the gas and bloating comes back stronger than normal (normal as in the past month) at certain times. At first I thought it was oatmeal and think that that really helps, but I also think banana's are a culprit. I love banana's so will give them a miss this week and see how I do. I haven't even tried to reintroduce things back yet and since I don't miss most of it, I probably won't if at all for a long time.

The only supplements that I take is a woman's one a day and accidolpholus (not sure on the spelling). That's it. I have always been the type of person who would much rather get the vitamins from my diet opposed to taking supplements. I will get all of this under control, but I think I sometimes just tend to put too much pressure on myself, but am also working on that. Promise.

Thank you as always for your kind words and great sense of humor!

Kim - I think holding and then letting go only counts for one! Do we have to take another poll on this one??

Sheri - Thanks for the kudos. I always say (and don't I always?) that a day without laughter is like a day without sunshine. Know what I mean?

I worry too, don't get me wrong, but most times I'm so busy, I forget about worrying UNTIL SOMETHING REALLY BIG HAPPENS. And when I say something really big, I mean like my husband getting sick and not being able to work for a year. Now, that's something to worry about. I had absolutely no control and no say in the matter. But, with IBS, we can do all the things we KNOW are right and hope that they work--don't worry that they won't.

So, keep a stiff upper, honey, everything will work out if you stick to it and most importantly, have a good attitude. I know it's hard to do when you don't feel well. (I've had gas for two days now, and I'm starting to get ticked because all I ate was 2 tbsp of FF sour cream...so today at the health food store, I bought soy sour cream and I'll see how that works). It's a bit higher in fat that I'd like, but it's should still be okay.

Sharon,

I just wanted to thank you for your great few posts today!

Sheri

PS

Hope the gas gets better! You will have to let me know how you get on with the new sour cream.
