not sure what's going on with this. i'm not sure if this is me turning ibs-a, or just being more attuned to my system and noticing things that have always happened.
(this is where i start what we all come to here, the explicit sharing of our bathroom habits.)
i always thought i was strictly ibs-d - i never had an attack on the other end of the spectrum. the first month or so after i started the diet, with the SFS and lots of SF foods, i was going to the bathroom well and regularly, pretty consistently mid-morning. the last week or two, though, the regularity's slacked off, and i'm only going every couple of days. i still feel like i need to go, and there's gas along with it, too. (as if i totally jinxed myself a couple of days ago talking about no more gas. but this gas is a little different - it feels like it's trapped because i need to go to the bathroom but can't.) when i finally do go i either need to strain a little or sit on the toilet for a while before anything happens, and then it's not a lot, and sometimes i don't feel like i'm done - i went a few hours ago, and didn't feel done, and now i'm gassy and a little rumbly, but not at all like d rumbles, just gas rumbles. i still feel like i need to go, but don't feel like i can.
i've never considered myself to be constipated before, though looking back, there have been times when i've had strange cramps that might have been C - it's never been something i've looked for, and i've never paid such close attention to my bathroom habits as i do now, so i don't know if this is exactly new. it is new in terms of my ibs, but though it's uncomfortable, it isn't painful and there aren't spasms, so it doesn't sound like the C people get from ibs. since it's the first time i've been 'irregular' since starting to treat my ibs, i've been trying, the last week or so, to include more IF, in case that's the trouble - oatmeal, cheerios, some safer fruits & veggies - and i'm continuing to up my psyllium dose. i take donnatol occasionally, every couple of days, but it doesn't seem to be related. i've started going to the gym, but that's supposed to make things *better.* in fact, everything i've been doing lately should be making me better, not worse. and especially not worse in this strange, uncharacteristic way. i eat pretty well, avoid triggers, drink lots of water and herbal teas, i'm incorporating IF, i take my SFS, i exercise and my stress has been decreasing - what could this be? and what can i do about it?
thanks. jaime

Definitly sounds like you might be constipated. I'm an IBS-C and experience all of the same symptoms. It could be that your body is adjusting to your diet changes. If this has only been happening for a week or two, I would advise you to stick it out another week or two, just to see if your body is trying to adapt. Until then, keep drinking lots of water and exercising, and let us know how much SFS you're taking. It could be that you need to up it a little more (gradually, of course).
Hope this helps!

Hi, Not sure what to do about it, but I just wanted to let you know that this happened to me as well. A month or so after starting the diet I became C for the first time in YEARS. And I've gotten bloated, which I never had before. I just stuck with the diet, ate a bit more IF and it went away.
Maybe it's the body reacting to a new way of eating. Or the gut trying to stablize and not quite getting it right.
Good luck! --Myra

i take the duane reade generic psyllium caps - right now i take 6 in the morning, and 3 later on in the day. i'm still working up. it's either 2 or 3 g of SF per 6 caps (i lost the label). i'm actually due to up my dose again, so i'm taking 4 in that second dose today.

Hi Jaime, Your symptoms are as C as C can be. Very similar to mine and all other C'ers. Try eating something that should make you have D and see if it works. -Bob

eating something that makes me D sounds really scary - even with these C-ish symptoms i've still had leanings towards D recently, including a full-on (stress-induced) attack last monday, the first in weeks.
i thought what distinguishes ibs-c from regular, run-of-the-mill common c is pain and spasms, neither of which i'm having.

Well, being IBS-C means that you have IBS attacks and run-of-the-mill constipation. The pain and spasms are usually a result of the IBS attacks.

I don't think advising to eat a something that usually triggers an attack is the best advice. Maybe someone who has been on the diet for a long time can help.

Jaime, this has been me in the last little while too - I've hardly EVER had C at all, but since going on the diet now and then I get it. Which probably means that I am (we are) tending towards IBS-A. Mostly this happens for me if I'm eating TOO safe (read: not enough IF) - that makes me swing towards C. Also lots of stress can swing me that way sometimes - mostly because when I'm stressed I do damage control by eating really safe, and if I'm not eating enough IF... you get the picture.
But eating foods that would normally trigger D is really NOT A GOOD IDEA! Why? Because, well, it gives you D. And then your gut is totally destabilized, and often you swing back to C, and then back to D, and back to C... and, well, yikes. That's a really difficult cycle to get out of.
Better advice is to probably just increase your SFS and your IF intake a bit, get lots of exercise and drink lots of water - that usually works for me and after a few days I'm usually back to normal. Your goal is to STABILIZE your gut and make it happy, not to freak it out even more.

but honestly I can go every day and be C and just be bloated.Being an A is really complicated that way. if you're not empty, you feel soooooo full.
I can't give advice on going back to D because I don't want you to get sick, but I can say I can swing from one side to the other in a matter of hours.Yesterday I had BAD C and took a laxative, and got icky D and swung back to hard C by today, whoa!

Laurel, Yes, you two are absolutely right. I was thinking that it might just simply counteract the C and make her normal like . Sorry, I was thinking to straight at the time . -Bob
