I was wondering if any IBS-Cers (who take Zelnorm and benefit from it) have successfully weaned themselves off of it? I am currently taking it 2x per day, and recently tried to reduce it by 1 dose, and now, C again! Has anyone tried this with success?

I haven't tried going off it yet but I would like to know more on this as well. I'm nearing the end of my three months and was thinking it would be a good idea to go off it slowly. I'm hoping that by taking a good sized dose of a fiber supplement at the same time would help keep up the benefits of the zelnorm. I have missed a dose occasionally and haven't noticed any problems. Good luck and let me know if you have any words of wisdom on it!

I've weaned my self off it, but I also take miralax. Now, I'm just taking 2 doses versus one of Miralax to make up for it. I had to stop zelnorm because I'm pregnant, but honestly, at about the time I stopped, it seemed to be losing it's effectiveness anyhow. If it works really well still, you just need to find something to replace it like more fiber, etc.

I've been on it over 10 months! My doctor thinks it's fine to keep taking it (but he's a nut case). But when I called the company, they told me they could not guarentee the safety after 12 weeks. They said that they have people who do take it continuously, but that they would not attest to the safety or the effectiveness of it.
I don't know if it was working or not...yet, I was deathly afraid to go off of it..just in case.
I also was taking one 6 mg tablet in am, and one before dinner. I reduced the second dose to 1/2 a pill beggining 7/27. Then went down to 1/2 pill in am too. Then reduced pm to 1/4 pill, then only 1/2 pill in am. Now, I'm at 1/4 pill in am and soon will be at zero pills.
I am attempting to try and take psyllium to get some SFS help. So far, the BMs are actually better than with the zelnorm, thank goodness.
As you can see from my original post here Zelnorm I was quite scared to do this.
I honestly don't know how this is going to work out for me. It's only been about 2 1/2 weeks. I suggest you cut back by 1/4 a tablet portions maybe. I think you may be cutting down too quickly.
Are you doing anything to "replace" the zelnorm...like taking flaxmeal (I do) or slippery elm, or maybe increasing the SFS a bit at a time? Maybe try increasing IF little by little to compensate for the loss of zelnorm.
Let us know how it goes for you! I am very interested in how others are doing this as I go off my zelnorm.

Hi Jessica, Say, do you ever find that Miralax makes your stool too soft and mushy? Also, do you take your two doses at once or spread them out in time? Thanks. -Bob

Get some Acacia, a good probiotic, drink lots of water and cut out the fats, add the insoluables....leave the Zelnorm alone! That stuff is BAD for you!

Yes, it's pretty runny, but it works. Fiber just makes me too bloated and uncomfortable. I take one dose in the morning and one dose later in the day or before bed.
