Hey, all. I haven't posted in a while because I've been mostly stable. But I recently have begun a 10-day course of amoxicillin for an infection, and it is doing a number on my stomach! My normally "C" body is spending the best part of the day in the bathroom and I'm in constant pain! Worse yet...we're scheduled to leave on vacation soon and I won't be done with the meds! Does anyone have any suggestions on how to survive the rest of this medication AND regain some semblance of stomach stability? I appreciate your advice!

Ugh, amoxicillan! Sorry you're having to go through this--but I hope your infection has cleared up.
Are you taking a probiotic? Also, have you gone back on the What to Eat When You Can't Eat Anything or BTC diet? I would probably stick to that for now and as needed during the trip. I would also take Imodium. Because you're usually C, you could try just taking 1 Imodium caplet in the morning and seeing how that helps. Some people have been mentioning Gatorade and Pedialyte for D, to make sure you don't get too dehydrated and to restore electrolytes you may be losing.
For the cramping, you probably want to stock up on peppermint tea and those heat patches that stick to your underclothes (these REALLY help me).
Anyway, I hope a Cer who has swung to the D side can respond. I wouldn't want you to go from one extreme to the other!
HTH!

Thanks, Maria! I take Zelnorm now to "control" my C and try to stick to the foods I know I can tolerate, but I was surprised at how my body reacted to the amoxicillin! I hadn't even thought about going back to the "what to eat when you can't eat anything" diet...I guess I somehow thought I was "past" that. I appreciate your advice!
I am an on again off again pro-biotic taker...I take so many pills it's hard to remember a supplement. But I am going to pick some up tonight (along with the Immodium). And believe me...all I've been drinking for the past few days is peppermint tea...in 90 degree heat!

Hi there,
Like you, my tummy DOES NOT like antibiotics! I had an especially bad time with major D and cramping once, and went out and got myself some probiotics which I do not regularly take. After a day of the probiotics, I was feeling WAY better! I also can just echo what the others said, eating a really safe diet, taking immodium (you can get it in liquid form if you only want to take a very small amount if you are worried about it making you C), drinking lots of peppermint. I also find that sometimes taking calcium supplements can really slow things down.
Good luck! --Steph

If you've found a soy yogurt you like, they're a great way to get probiotics and calcium in a tasty fashion.
