I was wondering... I thought about getting some soy cheese to use on sandwiches and in place of parmesan, etc, but every brand I can find in my area (NYC) contains some sort of milk product. First off, how can the dang things be marketed as vegan if they've got milk in them?? More relevantly: Are they still ok? I haven't noticed anyone describing particular brands of soy cheese to avoid. Thanks!

I can't answer the vegan question, since obviously, they AREN'T vegan if they contain dairy derivatives. But I can say that, as with anything else, you have to try them and see how they work with your individual tolerances. Some people can tolerate dairy derivatives ok in moderate amounts, which means they can eat the soy cheese and be ok with them. Other people can't tolerate them at all, which of course means they'd have to avoid the soy cheeses.
Personally, I've only found the soy parmesan edible; everything else tastes like sugary plastic to me. But I know some people on here just ADORE their soy cheese, so give it a try! Good luck!

Hi Emily, I don't think Melissa's brand of soy cheeses contains any milk products. I've been regularly eating their cheddar soy cheese without getting any worse. Then again, I'm still not stable. -Bob

I can eat the soy cheeses with casein in them without any problems, as can most board members I've talked to. It is a dairy derivative, yes, but doesn't seem to be as tough on IBSers as whey. But it's a personal thing, so you'll just have to see how your body reacts. Just remember that even soy cheeses are high in fat, so use them sparingly.

Hi Kree, Soy cheeses are high in fat!! Really, Uh oh, I've been eating two to three slices per day. I often sautee some mushrooms and zuc's, put them on a tortilla, and then melt two to three pieces of soy cheese on top. That could be part of my problems hmm...Thanks for the info and warning. -Bob

You're welcome... although I wouldn't think that 2-3 slices would bother you, especially if you're eating it with the soluble fiber of the tortilla. But if you're very sensative to fats I guess it could!

Thanks for the help, everyone!
I agree, actually, the soy cheeses I've tried taste a bit funky when eaten on their own.
Just curious: I thought casein was (part) of the problem with milk for people with IBS? I've been avoiding everything with casein in it, even things with sodium caseinate. I guess they're not automatically bad...? We'll have to see.
Thanks again.

Emily, I checked Melissa's brand, and they *do* contain milk products,i.e., caseins. Obviously, I didn't read the label carefully. Normally the soy products, like soy milks ,yogurts, and ice creams don't contain any milk products. The soy cheese has probably been contributing to my instability. Thanks for pointing it out! -Bob
