ok, it took the boy over a week to call, but he did, and we're going out for a drink tomorrow. a real live date. totally bizarre.
but i know. a drink. real great for ibs. i had one beer last week, on a stomach of SF, and felt mostly fine, so i'm thinking this'll be ok. and simpler than, as an ibs vegetarian, finding a restaurant. i'm eating super-safe today and tomorrow to make the drink as safe as possible, and i did my research and know to stick to vodka drinks with juice or 7up. (i'm okay with the bubbles. but dang i miss amaretto sours.)
i take my SFS (psyllium caps) in the morning - should i take a couple more before heading out, in addition to having a stomach full of sf dinner? i know that upping the SFS dose can cause gas, but maybe that won't kick in till the next morning?
also, folks talk about preventative immodium a lot - what are your thoughts on that versus donnatol? my donnatol side effects aren't too bad, but i think the alcohol might exacerbate them, and i don't want to be doped.

Hi,
I am usually OK with one or two drinks. I'd definitely take some fiber before going to dinner and having a drink. Sometimes before I'm going out and I definitely don't want to have any trouble, I'll take a 1/2 dose of Immodium. If it seems like something isn't agreeing with me at dinner, I'll go and take the other one. I think you'll be fine, especially since you can normally tolerate this.
Have fun! sandy

See if you can find some Equalactin. If you're not familiar, it's a chewable SFS that actually does not taste like crap. I almost always chew up a few, discreetly, right before I eat or drink anything that might be unsafe. It is an OTC product but sometimes the pharmacist has it behind the counter; you don't need a prescription. It's about 7.50 here in the city, and CVS and Duane Reade both usually have it. It's in a small red and white box. If the cashier at the pharmacy counter says they don't have it, ask to talk to the pharmacist. Sometimes they don't realize they have it -- I've had to spot it on their shelves before and walk them over to it. Anyway give that a try. As for the immodium, someone else will have to answer that. It makes me so C it's not even worth it. I would say do the best you can to stick to just one drink -- It might calm your muscles enough to let you have a good time without getting you into trouble. If you feel like having a "drink drink" try a Manhattan. It's mostly burboun and it's a serious drink, but it comes in a martini glass and requires very slow sipping. So, you can get away with drinking very little but without making it noticeable.
Where are you two going? Have fun!

Donatal has a barbituate in it, so it's going to affect you more if you drink on it. I'm a straight D, and when I drink beer I must have an antacid!!! Beer bloats me so bad!! Normally I'd just take 3 imodium beforehand, then stick to mixed (non-fruity) drinks. Imodium will make you dizzy if you wash them down with alcohol, so take it an hour before you drink. Those are my only suggestions!

not sure where we're going yet - he lives in hell's kitchen and i'm on the ues, so either by him, because there are cool bars there (as opposed to my 'hood, which is all families and frat boys), or the uws, since it's between our places. know any good places?
i'm definitely planning on sticking to one drink. probably a vodka something-or-other.
i used to be the silliest drinker - all malibu and sour drinks, never anything that actually tasted like alcohol. but i've never been a *big* drinker, so this isn't hard to get used to (certainly saves money!), and only gets tricky in situations like this.

If you like vodka drinks, you could always go for a vodka martini, or an appletini. If you like wine, chardonnay seems to be one of the easier drinks for IBSers to tolerate. I can drink white wine without it bothering most of the time. I'm not alot of help on the Immodium though...I used to occasionally take one before going out if I felt like I might have problems. Nowadays, just one will give me C for a week.
