"Dangerous" as in I am considering going to Dairy Queen this weekend and having ice cream...and it is that time of the month (TMI), so I know it would be potentially even more of a bad idea than normal.

So the question part is, is it worth it? How painful will the retribution be? All I remember dairy doing to me is creating gas, but for months I haven't had more than butter now and then and the tiniest bit of cheese a couple weeks ago.

I really haven't purposely fallen off the wagon yet. I've had attacks, though less & less often. I did have a pop awhile ago that bugged me, but that was sort of an experiment because I didn't think it was one of my triggers before. So, is it worth it when you eat something you KNOW is going to hurt later?

haha it depends on how worth it it is!!

I don't get alot of pain and uncomfortableness (I just made that word up myself thank you very much!)

So for me.. a little diarrhea is worth it.. however, everyone is different. I guess it depends on how hellish your attacks are! My d sucks.. but everyonce in awhile its worth a sneaky treat.

I learned my lesson hard. The most difficult thing for me to give up has been soda. A couple months ago, I tried a Coke for the first time in over a year. It didn't bother me, so I had another one the next day. Pretty soon I was drinking one every day, even though I knew it was bad, and it only took a couple weeks of that before I suddenly found myself with horrible D attacks... that lasted a MONTH, even after quitting the soda again. Needless to say, I won't do THAT again.

But, you know, it depends on how badly you want that treat and how bad your attacks have been in the past. Even if you got away with little cheats before, there's always a good chance that you *won't* get away with it this time.

I agree with what Ashley said - it depends.
I do it, I admit it!
If I really want it, I will have something but only if I have nothing to do the next day.
Sometimes I don't get any problems, other times I do.
I can't go TOO crazy, though or I can be really suffering and regret it.
Sometimes I take an immodium before I do something like that to be on the safe side!

Good luck! Dairy Queen is pretty risky, but if you go for it, I hope you enjoy it and don't suffer!
Cheers!

Ha ha, I know how you feel! Once I'm around other people I completely forget what I shouldn't eat and pay the price later. However, for me if I only eat a small bit of the forbidden food, I can usually pull it off. I also found the digestive enzymes helped lessen the symptoms when it's something I know that will probably bother me. I'm not the kind of person who can overcome a craving and so far if I'm feeling stable I can usually sneak in something bad and get away with it.

Good luck and enjoy that ice cream if you go for it!

Casey, It may have just been the caffiene in Coke that triggered the D. You may well be able to drink other sodas.
I'm surprised you made it a couple weeks before getting hit.
Possibly you could drink one once in awhile. -Bob

Go ahead if you need the "slap on the wrist" attack to REMEMBER INTIMATELY why it's a bad idea.

When you do "Fall off the wagon" .. what steps do you need to take to recover? Do you have to start all the way at the beginning again with the BTC diet, or does it usually go back to normal on its own?

Well I can say that right now unfortunately this is exactly where I am

I've been so bad in the last few weeks with not getting enough sleep and not eating well, and bingeing on sugar, yeah I've totally destabilized... ugh. So for me that means on on the BTC diet, strict, for a few days, and then I'll be working myself back up. Usually it doesn't take nearly as long though as the first time, imo.

For less severe slipups though I don't usualy go to the BTC diet... just start eating right again and it usually goes back to normal. Honestly though, the more 'falling off the wagon' experiences I have the less possible that is, i.e. the longer I go being stable the easier it is to get back to being stable. Does that make sense?

Snorkie:

If you are craving ice cream, why not go to McDonald's Hamburgers and buy some of their ice cream instead?

One of my former doctors, who is severely lactose intolerant, once told me McDonald's ice cream doesn't contain any milk products.

I don't know if it is true that McDonald's ice cream is milk-free, but it should be pretty easy to find out since I'm sure they would tell you. However, even if it's milk-free, be warned that it could contain other "bad" things so you would have to check on the ingredients. If you do, let us know what you find out!

Because it's not true. They do use reduced fat ice cream, however, if the website is to be believed.

I don't know. I probably won't do it, though I'm sorely tempted to go out for ice cream. Having sorbet or Tofutti just isn't the same, you know?

If you can find it, consider Soy Dream or Soy Delicious ice cream instead. It's high in fat but dairy free and I find I can eat more of it than I should after a high-soluble fiber meal. Months ago I compiled a list of all the recommended flavors from various posts and I listed them all here. If you don't eat soy, Rice Dream Carob Almond Chip is very good. There's even a recipe on the Recipe Board for Better Than Hershey's Chocolate Syrup is you want to really splurge.

If you decide to go for real dairy ice cream, I'd suggest taking Lactaid beforehand. It won't protect you from the fat or the proteins, but it will protect you from the lactose. Every little bit helps.

Too bad. I knew it was too good to be true that McDonald's ice cream was milk-free!

You might try Rice Dream ice cream. It is milk-free. It gives me D, but it might be okay for you. The good thing about it is that it doesn't contain any added sugar although it's sweet so I don't know how they manage to sweeten it.

By the way, it has been so long since I had ice cream (I can't tolerate sugar so I had to give up foods with sugar in addition to foods with milk) that I don't even crave it anymore!

Find me a cure for IBS and blood sugar, though, and I'll be happily into the Haagen Daas PRONTO!!!

I've tried Rice Dream. It tasted like froze rice & soy sauce to me. I also tried some sort of soy thing that was just...weird. I don't think it was Soy Delicious. I've been pretty happy with Tofutti. I do know better than to have too much of it because of the fat content.

Anyhoo, sorry if I clogged the board mentioning my crave.

Buy yourself an ice cream maker, I got a new one off of an ad on craigslist, an online want ad place. Mac and I have had a blast making homemade sorbets and rice milk ice creams this summer. The current on in the freezer is vanilla cherry - vanilla rice milk ice cream base with chopped dark sweet cherries from Trader Joe's! You get what flavors you like without the fat, additives and the triggers (well, unless eating/drinking cold stuff is a trigger for you). We've made mango, peach, and lime-mint sorbet, as well as the ice cream.

Also yummy, make Heather's Chocolate Silk pudding and stick it in the freezer. Instant chocolate ice cream!

I agree with the others that there are some really good soy ice creams out there. Some of it sucks. Rice ice cream personally makes me want to vomit. I love the mint choc chip Tofutti Cuties, but they do have HFCS. If you do buy an ice cream maker (I saw your question on the recipe board), I've found that chocolate or choc mint are the best flavors. I have yet to either make or buy a vanilla soy ice cream that doesn't taste like soy. If you're not sensitive to HFCS, I have a fabulous mint cookies'n'cream ice cream recipe that's low in fat that I could post over in the recipe board. My favorite DQ blizzard was always Oreo mint. Yum.

This made me think about all of those posts recently of people wondering "what food caused my attack???" ... recently I bought some hullless popcorn (which is supposed to be easier on IBSers, though still definitely IF), and I had decided to try some. Well, I knew it would be too high in fat 'cause I'd have to put around 1 T of melted margarine on it to be any good ... so I deliberately ate plain mashed-up potatoes for dinner (nothing on 'em but salt and a bit of pepper). I chickened out and didn't eat the popcorn. The next day, I had a bad attack. I realized that I would have blamed it on the popcorn if I'd eaten it -- but I had eaten NOTHING unsafe (and was not stressed or hormonal). This makes me wonder how often I blame attacks on food when they were caused by, well, the mysterious IBS Attack Fairy or whatever.

If you do decide to cheat, good luck and I hope you don't have an attack. Take an anti-spasmodic or an Immodium beforehand, though. And let us know what happens!

Hi Snorkie, You should try the Soy Delicious 'ice creams',
they're very good! Well, at least the flavors that I've tried,
which are Carob Peppermint and Creamy Vanilla. I think the
texture is excellent and the taste is great. Their website ia
turtlemountain.com if you want to check out their products.

with taking lactaid, i actually find that low-fat frozen yogurt is easier for me than the higher-fat dairy-free ice cream substitutes. though soy delicious ice cream sandwiches are really, really good.

I've been wondering about Lactaid. I may have to give it a go.

Well, folks, in the end, I avoided dairy temptation over the weekend. This time, I decided I'm not fond of the IBS fairy even when she's not being mysterious. Better Pecan Tofutti was my friend instead.
