I wanted to encourage everyone who hasn't, to get their thyroid hormone levels checked.

Hypothyroidism (too little thyroid hormone) can cause C.
Hyperthyroidism (too much)can cause D.

I have an autoimmune disease that causes me to be primarily hypothyroid, but I have also had spikes at times where I was hyperthyroid. Prior to being dxd, I was told I had IBS. I probably do have mild IBS, but when my thyroid levels are in check I have no problems.

I have a friend who had chronic D for seven years and was dxd with IBS. She actually had Graves disease- the autoimmune disease characterized by too much thyroid hormone.

If you would like to read more about this, web page
is a very good informative website.

Best,
Jocie

A very good reminder! I don't remember now if that's in the list here on the site of conditions to check for before an IBS diagnosis can be reached, but it's definitely a good thought, especially if your doctor doesn't think of it first. Mine did - in fact, that was the first thing I was checked for, even with no family history of thyroid issues.

I was checked and perfect levels, also. At least one thing in this bod of mine is working right.
Good advice.

I've had three doctors check mine along the process of getting an IBS diagnosis. My Internal Doc checked before prescribing Zelnorm, my GI checked again as symptoms worrsened and testing went into "oscopy" mode, and then I had a second internal doc check not long after that for and illness not related to my gi tract. Unless the levels really fluctuate, mine are very normal on a consistant basis.

Guess these AL doctors are pretty on top of their game!

I'm so glad many have had doctors who wanted to check their thyroid levels. It is important to know that the American Asso. of Endocrinologists have recommended that the "normal" range for TSH be .3 - 3.0.

The current range being used by most labs is .5 - 5.0. If you are above 3.0 and constipated it is highly likely due to your thyroid. My doctor treats me based on my symptoms and I tend to have symptoms when my TSH level is above 1.5!

Just FYI for those struggling with their IBS but eating all the right things.
