I would like to get an idea of where most people have their pain. It said in "IBS first year" that it should be lower and if its upper its not IBS. In relation to the belly button, mine is above or over it. And never when I eat fat things like fast food and meats, even milk...never a problem. I dont think IBS is my primary problem but the doctors cant find anything.
Please let me know some of your symptoms out there!!

thanks,
steph

Lower bowel pain, under belly button. Cramps, spasms, bloat, gas, constipation....all below the belly button. Also, belching and sometimes nausea But, lower bowel pain is the worst! How lovely.

My pain is primarily above the belly button too, but also in the lower abdomin, and even the chest. I have been diagnosed with IBS, because the doctors could not find anything else...
This is very confusing to me, because I've always been told that IBS causes pain in the lower abdomin.
Any ideas?

Exactly the same as Augie, except I also get pain in my back as well. The pain seems to wrap all the way around at times.

I have an appt. with a Dr. in NYC on the 18th. She is an IBS specialist at New York Presbyterian at the University of Columbia and Cornell. She charges a fortune ($250-$600 for consultation) and doesnt take my insurance but I probably have spent thousands in hospital bills and co-pays over the years. I figure if anyone can rule out everything and diagnose me with IBS it will be her. I have a feeling I'm going to be in the same boat as you are. "Cant find anything...you must have IBS" Unfortuneatly, the IBS diet doesnt work for me. The more crap I eat (fast food, ice cream, cookies, pizza, pasta..etc.) the better I am. SO I dont know what I'll do!!!
Is your pain directly associated with bowel movements?
Do you ever feel a burning? If I were to point out where the pain is on a diagram it would probably be in the transverse colon...the part that goes across your body. I dont know if that is a part of IBS..
Hey...if you feel pain in your chest, isnt that some kind of reflux?

I just got back from being diagnosed by a Dr Peter K Chang. He's located at 87th Street and Park Avenue and associated with Mt Sinai Hospital. He and his staff were really a huge help and symathetic with what I was going thru. I am now on a path to getting better. I don't know what insurance you have but Dr Chang accepted mine. Good Luck I will keep you in my prayers.

I get nausea first. The pain seems to travel as if I am feelinfg the whole digestive process. I also get pain that travels from behind the ribs and travels forward. But the worst is the lower ab as the process continues. I believe I am an A type. I get D and C at different times.

My pain (since 1994)was almost always behind my left ribcage and just under it. Later on I got severe bloating and lower left abdominal cramping. Since starting on the diet my pain has lessened tremendously. I sometimes get an ache behind the left ribcage, and sometimes more severe pain in the abdomin, and especially at the closed colostomy sight. I was C, now with the meds and diet I am more D.
