Hey everyone. Just wondering if anyone out there has tried any supplemental foods other than Ensure (which is high in fat and dairy)? I've seen one in a book called Vital HN which comes as a dry powder that contains pre-digested protein, calories, minerals and vitamins. There is another one called Criticare, which is also has pre-digested protein, but is definitely very expensive.

Some of you have mentionned rice protein products? What are they, what do they have in them, and do you know if they are also gluten-free?

I ask because, though I eat a fair bit, I'm wondering if I'm absorbing much as my weight has fallen on the diet. As well as IBS-D, I also have coeliac disease to contend with. It seems like a good idea to supplement my diet and/or to rest my bowel sometimes. I used to do this with Ensure, but it has many ingredients not safe on our diet.

Has anyone tried Vital HN, and is it IBS diet safe?

I haven't tried that one. But I do make myself shakes sometimes- used to everyday. I use silk soymilk, banana fresh or frozen and a scoop of soy protein powder - I get Gary Null's "muscle" which my wife loves to tease me about since I don't exercise. It has a lot of different vit. and min. in it but no herbal supplements or anything, I think its all soy and I digest it fine. I get it at our food co-op in brooklyn, but any decent health food store will have lots of different protein powders to choose from. I never called the company to check if its gf or not.
