I have IBS-C.....2 days ago I changed from Metimucil (sp?) wafers to Citrucil(sp?) I was taking the wafers first thing in the morning and about 30 mins before dinner. I've been doing the same with the Metimucil...(taking 2 pills each time).... I had no BM's for one day...then today 5 times in about 8 hours...then last one being all "D" & gas..... and burning I took an Imodium right away. I just had some rice and will have some applesauce later if I get hungry. I just hope I get this under control & stable before our trip to the ocean for our 1st anniv .....we leave Thurs night and don't return until Tues.....wish me luck...

Hi Shell,
I'm sorry your having a bad night.
You might be sensitive to the citric acid in Citrucel. Or you may have over done it on the fiber?
I hope you feel better soon.
Good Luck

Hi,
So sorry you are having a bad night. I have them constantly unless I take something to sleep, not something I like to do. I noticed one of your replies mentioned overdoing the fiber. I wonder if there is not something to that. During the day I do fairly well, D- under control with Heather's diet. But night is one constant anxiety attack. This diet seems to keep my body upset - except for the fact that I have D- control.
If you have any more ideas let me know.

Sorry you're having such a bad time. I was a little confused about your message. You switched from Metamucil wafers to the Citrucel pills??? Is that correct? Let us know exactly how much of each you were taking and maybe we can help you figure out the dosage/ Good luck. I know you don't want this trouble on your trip.

Thanks everyone for your support.... that is what I love about this place!!

Yes, I was taking 2 wafers (about 8am before breakfast & 6-7pm before dinner) for a total of 4 wafers a day and now I'm taking 2 pills (about 8am before breakfast & 6-7pm before dinner) for a total of 4 pills. The reason I changed was I'm thinking about what Heather said about the husk causing gas...and I had a lot of it

Let me know if anyone has any suggestions......

I'm not familiar with the Citrucel pills. (I use the powder.) How much fiber is in one pill compared to the Metamucil wafers? From what I understand, there's not that much fiber in one Metamucil wafer, so maybe the Citrucel dosage is too high for you. Can someone else help you with this, possibly Heather? We certainly don't want you to have problems while you are on your trip! Are you sure it was the fiber and not something you ate that bothered you yesterday?) I do think you will have less gas with the Citrucel. The Metamucil, as well as the FiberChoice tablets, gave me loads of gas!!!! That wouldn't be good for your anniversary trip!

Maybe the best thing to do right now would be to go back to eating your wafers just like you use to do. You had alot of gas with them, but at least you didn't have the problems you have now with the pills. Then, when you get home and don't have the added stress of your anniversary trip, you can switch to the pills. And, maybe start with 1 pill at a time for a couple days and gradually build up to 2 pills. Let your body adjust to the increase in fiber. I try not to ever "try something new" right before traveling/trips.
Oh, and I never use immodium anymore. I have IBS-C too and once I take the immodium it really sets me up for big time Constipation, pain, cramps for several days following. If you have bad D maybe just eat plain white rice, bananas, plain french bread for a while, 'til it settles down. Just my thoughts---hope they help. Good Luck on your Anniversary Trip! Try to enjoy every minute!

2 Metamucil wafers equals one scoop of Metamucil powder (I WAS eating 4 wafers a day. So, the dose I WAS eating = two scoops)

4 Citrucel pills equals one scoop of Citrucel powder (I've been taking 4 pills a day. So, the dose I've been taking = one scoop)

So, it looks like I'm taking less now then before.

Not that I can think of, the only thing I changed was I made brown instant rice instead of white rice with dinner.

tierny: you know...I never even thought about it not being a good idea to make the change before the trip. I'll see how I feel today.... and then maybe I will just have to go back to the wafers..... they work like a charm.... just was tired of the gas I will also watch to see what the imodium does to me, maybe I should not take that either.....(*note: that is what my Dr ALWAYS told me to take.... he was the only one I listened to until I found Heather)

The count down is on....... about 36 hours till we hit the road......

Hi Shell,

If you're like me (I also have IBS-C), I am usually extra constipated for a couple days after I take Immodium. This is why I only take Immodium when I have to be somewhere and cannot afford to have D. Maybe the constipation will continue through your trip to the beach?

As for the Citrucel, I recently just started Citrucel after my doctor told me she wanted me to stick with it until I see her in a month, whether they produce BMs or not. I had tried Citrucel a year ago and found it gave me horrible pains and D. I told my doctor this and she told me to start on a low dose and increase my dose slowly. I decided to start my fiber suppliments last week (after my vacation) and started with 2 pills a night. All last week, the only change that I noticed is that I don't have so much gas in the morning when I wake up.

This week, though, I have started taking 3 pills at night and have noticed that I don't have to strain as much when having BMs. I am hoping to start taking 2 pills in the morning and 2 pills at night next week, and if my body continues in the pattern so far, hopefully it will get better.

So my suggestion would be to start with a low dose, and although you may not see results instantly, your body might adjust to the new form of fiber that you're receiving. Hope this helps - and have a great trip to the beach!

I am sorry I have no advice for what would be best here. I don't take any fibre supplements or anything.

But I just wanted to say I am sorry you are feeling so awful, I hope you can get it sorted out so you can ready to enjoy your trip.

Feel better soon,

Thanks for all your info.....

I'm thinking that the immodium is not my friend either.

This morning I cut back to just one citrucil....and will take one more before dinner and see how that goes.

I did not really feel like eating at lunch today...I'm kind of feeling bloated and achy. I did eat a half of a ff pita pocket w/smoked turkey breast from the deli with nothing else on it with a small bottle of water. Then about 30 mins later I ate a ripe, cold peeled pear (YUMMY)....

I'll try chicken breast & white rice for dinner.... do you think that adding a chopped cooked green pepper to the mix would hurt??

I've had 2 BM's today....the 2nd one was small.... but at least things are moving

Lana_Marie.... 1st off, I have to say... you look just like a girl I went to high school with. And 2nd thanks for your comments.

I'm crossing my fingers.... the thoughts of knowing I'm going to be on the beach soon will reduce my stress level and maybe take my mind off of not feeling well. At least this time I've had Heather and all of you here to turn to. This time last year when I got married.... all I had was my Dr who told me just to plan on having a bad tummy and take imodium with me. **NOTE: I was soooo happy about the wedding and my mind was so focussed on it being the greatest day of my life IT WAS But then it hit me on day 4 of our honeymoon but my hubby was so understanding..... by the 6th day I was fine!! And so was he {{wink wink}}

Hi,

You know I must have one of those common faces because I get more people telling me I look like So and So. It makes me laugh actually!

Have fun on the vacation and enjoy (wink wink) LOL

We are hitting the road in about 5 hours.......

My tummy is still grumpy at me..... but I think it is getting better...... I've been real careful. I've had one more BM today and no more D.... so that is promising!!

I'm packed up with safe foods and I've requested menus in advance to any of the restaurants that we have reservations at.... so I have a plan

You all have a wonderful Labor Day weekend...... I'll check in Tues 2nd.

I have to say.... changing from Metamucil to the Citrucel....the bloating & gas have reduced by about 90%....see all that time I was in pain....all I knew was it was helping with BM's so I did not want to change..... THANK YOU HEATHER for the info on Metamucil causing that!! (maybe not in everyone....but me for sure!!)

Hi Shell,
I did much better after switching to Citrucel. My doctor told me last December to get rid of the Metamucil because of the gas and bloating too.

I know all too well how horrible Metamucil is for some people!! I took it months ago and it gave me horrible bloating, pressure, fullness, gas, gas cramps, gas pains. I thought I was going to die! I'm taking Citrucel now too but it's not even sold here! It use to be. I have to order from the U.S. It costs an arm and leg too!
Take care
