Wondering how stool softeners benefit anybody with IBS-C. How much more water(than 8-10 glass average)does one need to take in for these to be effective?

hi-- what kind of stool softeners are you taking? for 3 years i took these red and white ones from jewel--and fibercons. i took them all-together w/dinner but never really found relief. i recently stopped taking the softeners by mistake actually and havent noticed much of a difference from when i was taking them so i guess they werent changing anything for me. you should still drink the same amount--8-12 glasses of water daily. its only stressed to drink extra water if youre taking extra fiber supplements b/c the water will help activate them. without enough water it will cause more C. hope that helps some!

I take stool softeners every morning(store brand Colace, but NOT Peri-Colace), and I find they help a lot! When I skip a day I definitly notice. I'm not sure if you have to drink more water, I just drink the same amount. Just make sure if you buy a stool softener, it doesn't also have a stimulant laxative in it too, cause stimulant lax are bad for you and will hurt.

I take a prescription stool softener daily. Its called Lactulose. Also goes by the name of Enulose. It has saved my life, as I suffer from chronic constipation. Its a syrup made up of only simple sugars, which draw water into the intestines abd soften the stools. Good stuff!
