Stress and anxiety make my tummy hurt and increase IBS symptoms. Lately, I have been stressing over my IBS (vicious circle). Any safe and natural remedies to minimize anxiety?

Try yoga several times a day. You can also try St Johns Wort.

I'd try the IBS Audio 100 hypnotherapy. I can never say enough about how much it helped with my stress and anxiety from IBS.

I use aromatherapy oils. "Rescue Remedy" (based on Bach flower remedies) is a lifesaver. There's a lotion, too. Yoga, and MEDITATION, N.L.P. are things I do daiy. I find, too, when I eat less sugars I am less anxious. Avoiding caffeine and stimulants, is another thing. MUSIC--the sound factor can really move your mind beyond the PANIC, the anxiety, give you another focus to mentally, psychically cling too.

I use rescue remedy too, along with gelseminum and ignacia. They work great to calm the jitters, especially if I have a presentation due at work I'm stressing over.
Rescue remedy has alcohol in it though, so watch out if you're taking medicines that react with alcohol (like codiene).

I carry the new spray bottle version with me. Just spray it on my tongue like breath spray. Not sure if it helps though.

Stress is my BIGGEST trigger!! I've introduced 100mg of 5-htp to my diet, and it has really helped. I can't go any higher without stomach upset, so I've been at 100mg for almost 8 months. Hope this helps! I primarily take this for PMS though, but I'm sure it helps my IBS too!

Amino Acid supplement that is a precusor to seratonin. It raises the seratonin levels in the bloodstream and has been proven to really help anxiety in many folks. 5-hydroxytriptophan.

Rescue Remedy is an herbal formula that helps with nervousness. When I get nervous, I get that feeling in my stomach like I've shown up to school and haven't done my homework. When I talk to a group of strangers, my voice can tremble, I lose my place, and my hands shake. Hand shaking/tremors are the absolute WORST for me because everybody notices!!
The Rescue Remedy spray (there's also drops) are available at herbal and natural food shops, including Whole Foods Market (formerly Fresh Fields) in MD, DC and VA. Don't know about the rest of the country.
The Ignatia and Gelseminum are sugar disolvables available for decades in France and England, now recently gaining popularity in the US. I would pick them up in France when I went over during the summer, before I realized there were appearing at Whole Foods. They work the same way, tranquillizing the nervous system just a bit, and easing the symptoms of panic and nerves. They work instantly, which is the BEST.
Good Luck--

Wind, I know you're taking Buspar, and Nelly, if you're taking any prescription anti-anxiety meds, how does Rescue Remedy interact w/ these meds? Are they safe to use together? Does it have any affect on D?
I'm mostly worried about tranquilizing effects or mental awareness; I have to commute, but I'd like something to use at work or on trips. With the Buspar I no longer get the stomach/abdominal pains or sleep problems, but at work I still tend to feel a bit nauseated and get those beautiful hand tremors--like I'm conducting music w/ a fast tempo, super-prestissimo. ![](/messageboards/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif)
Thanks for your help!

I think RESCUE REMEDY has a more sublime impact/effect. The flower essences effect/harmonize a different sphere of being then the drugs. It works on the pheronome or smell frequency and the taste frequency--that's the best way to describe it. Sort of like manipulating your environment to create a sense of calm, you know like colours and flowers and light and music does. Bach flower remedies tend to align or harmonize you psycho-energetically. It's not nauseating like perfume. It's totally safe to use together. It doesn't stimulate my gastrocolic reflex, if that's what you mean by affecting D.

Thanks for the description and explanation. I will definitely consider giving this try and check with my local HFS (I can get a little nervous about trying new remedies). And I was referring to stimulation of the gastrocolic reflex, so thanks for taking the time to answer that question as well.

I like the Rescue Remedy lotion, too. I get so totally stressed and anxious that I have outbursts of eczema. Seriously...it just has a sublime calmative effect on my nerves.

I don't take any Rx anxiety meds. I don't like them because they make me fuzzy, high, and affect my memory. I also get the classic "Hello, I'm high" look on my face: high eyebrows, wide eyes, and the airy high voice. Not the image I want to project as a professional.
The herbals are non-addicting also, and don't affect mood. I can take them and still be in a bad mood and just have my hands stop shaking and voice trembling. I don't know of any interactions between Gelseminum and Ignacia, which are the ones I carry in my purse. Good luck!
