How do they test for Bacterial Overgrowth/Bad Bacteria?

Has anyone had this done? How do they test for it? What is the procedure?

I had a test today for bacteria where I blew in a tube, drank some citrus stuff, waited half an hour and then blew in the tube again.
Simple, simple!
