I've always been a big proponent of vegetables - I don't believe a healthy diet exists without tons of them. But since I got IBS, I've found it hard to eat a bunch of them without getting a little bloated.

So after some experimenting I found that eating all my servings at night, right before bed, is the best way to do it - I do get bloated, but it is completely gone by the next morning and all that IF makes me "go" almost every morning now! And, it cuts down on late-night munchies because vegetables are ff and have virtually no calories.

Just something to think about.

Do you eat something before hand? or just on an empty tummy? I am A, leaning towards more C lately, so I may try this out.

How many servings do you eat at night? What veggies do you eat that help the most?

And do you have them with dinner or is that "too early"? I'm assuming you are still cooking them and eating them with a SF?

Thanks, glad it's working for you! BMs are so nice.

I'm finding out the exact same thing works for me! I'm an acacia gal, cal/mag supplement and some Omega 3's too, but with water and plenty of IF in the evening, my mornings are MUCH easier!! It sure is an individual thing with C though, isn't it? I think the D is easier - at least for me....

Anyway, glad this is helping you! It's helping me too!

I sometimes have a small piece of bread before, but since I'm not worried about the bloating, I don't do much SF. Although, last night I was hungry and had a big bowl of oatmeal around 9:30 and then ate a big salad with carrots around 11. And, ta-da, no bloating today.

You COULD eat them with dinner if you're not worried about the bloating - that's my main concern.

good luck!

I sometimes eat a small piece of bread beforehand, but usually it's within an hour or 2 of eating a meal - like last night, I had oatmeal, so it cushions the IF a bit. Since I'm not concerned about bloating at night, I don't try to up the SF beforehand and find that even if I'm a bit bloated, it's always gone by the next morning, along with a nice BM!

That is SO CRAPPY for you!! I'm so sorry to hear that it was that bad last night!

You might try it during the day - if you are very C, it can cause bloating on its own, so a bit more bloating that makes you go might actually decrease the bloating over time. Just a thought.

Hope you feel better, dear!

My supper is also predominantly veg. based, and low sf and I find, that you really do get a good clean-out! Also, with time, you know what will give you the gas/bloating and thus remove them from your menu. Also, certain combinations of things give you bloating and styles of preparation. Sf for me at dinner or around dinner is usually mushrooms, or a banana, or maybe squash or some sort, or carrots, or mangoes, or papaya. It's a great way also to really keep the calories and carbs. down.

I want to start trying flax fish oil capsules but don't know if I should get the Omega 3 or the Omega 3-6-9.

I am IBS-C. Does anyone know which one would be more helpful for constipation? What's the difference between the two anyhow?

Thanks.

Omega 3 is one of the oils we need, Omega 6 and Omega 9 are the other two. So the OMega 3-6-9 would be better IMHO as it's an all rounder.

Dear Elizabeth,

Man, I do not know how you could load up on veggies late at night like that! I am an A with some pretty wild swings, but in general I have finally had to give up on any night snacks at all after dinner/before bed because it seemed like the food would sit and just PLOP PLOP and bloat in my stomach whenever I *tried* to go to sleep. Besides, I go to bed really early--around 9:15-9:30 usually nowadays as I get "older" --but I also get up around 4:30, so I have an excuse.

I sometimes worry about not putting anything in my tummy between dinner (c. 6:00 PM) and breakfast (c. 7:00 AM), esp. with getting up so early, but I am pushing my luck for a little while at least.

I agree with you about veggies--I guess being a vegan makes me partial--though grains are just about my best friend now as I am working on stabilizing.

Be well.

Omega 3 or Omega 3-6-9? That's all I really want to take it for! I've seen others have had luck with this and I would like to try it too.

I don't know specifics other than what I was told at the health food store. The lady recommended a blend for best absorption and the broadest spectrum of good oil. I've been on them now for a little over 2 months, and I think it is helping.

So you take the Omega 3-6-9 combo and not the Omega 3?

What brand do you take?

I take NOW brand. Fatty oils are classified as 3, 6, or 9 (I'm assuming based on their chemical composure) and the Omega 3:6:9 contains oils from all three of those classifications.

Hi Ghost,

Do what works for you. If veggies will sit in your tummy all night long and keep you awake, this obviously won't work. But how about eating a bunch of veggies with dinner or as an afternoon snack? Just a suggestion - you know your tummy and what works for you!

I've found that I have to have about 12hrs between the time I eat the veggies and the time I get up in the morning for me not to be bloated. So, since I've been getting up a little earlier, I now eat them around 8 or 9pm, rather than 11pm.

Dear Elizabeth,

I usually try to do my veggies--5 servings a day--at lunch and dinner, sometimes other times to! Go for the veggies, definitely! And I am really happy you found something that helps your C; that can be really awful.

Be well.

Hi Elizabeth,
Is salad what you usually have for IF? What kind of lettuce? What kind of dressing do you use? I used to be addicted to olive oil w/ fresh lemon juice, garlic, sea salt & pepper.

I'm just looking for ideas. Salad sounds good. And so does "going".

I'd been eating a lot of mixed greens, but due to getting my period, my tummy was not happy with it. I'll probably start back to eating more salads after this week, but for now I've been eating steamed zucchini and squash, lots of cooked spinach, lots of carrots, green beans, mushrooms, tomatoes and a little broccoli.

How are you doing? Has there been any improvement?

Hi Wendy. I hope all is improved. I thought I'd share a few of my favourite salad dressing tips. Prior to IBS, I used to be addicted to the type of dressing that you mentioned. I find, though, that I'm hypersensitive to the olive oil. I find, also, that most fatfree salad dressings are vile, especially the Italian. Lowcal Italian almost always makes me feel retched and nauseated. Therefore I whip up my own.

Iceburg lettuce gives me major gas and bloating and therefore I do not eat it. There is no raw cabbage involved , either. Just lettuce--romaine hearts, spring mix, alfalfa sprouts, boston lettuce, leaf lettuce--those sit well with me. Raw spinach does not digest well with me.

I love heating balsalmic vinegar and reducing it and then pouring it on my lettuce, with stevia and sometimes a little dijon and lemon. Carrot juice and cider vinegar is pretty good too, but lately I'm cutting down on my frutcose intake.
I love roasting or grilling mushrooms, the darker and earthier the better and using the reserve liquid as the vinegrette, with a little lemon and balsalmic vinegar. Or even lime juice. If I feel like a thicker dressing, I use a puree of vegetable or a soup and pour that on the salad with a little tartness or acidity, usually from vinegar and/or lemons. If it need a little sweetening I go for stevia. Sea salt makes a world of difference. I used to like fruity dressings, which I pureed, heated and reduced, i.e. with berries and balsamic vinegar or apricots, mangoes, cranberries, etc. Those ones really go through me to fast, lately, so I've been avoiding them. This next one sounds gross, but it's rather good. A whipped potatoe and herb dressing is delicious and really creamy and thick. Sweet potatoes are really good, too. Oh, how could I forget...the
creamy zucchini dressing. Just cook and puree zucchini and add any palatable herbs and liquid until you get the consistency you enjoy. Roasted and peeled peppers/tomatoes if you tolerate them--I do not--are delicious dressings. I know you detest spinach, but I really like my creamy spinach dressing which is basically steamed and pureed spinach with herbs/lemon/balsalmic vinegar, etc., a little stevia.

Those are just a few flash thoughts and salads that sit well with me.

Wind (Kate, IBS-D).

Thanks Wind,
Actually I love fresh spinach or cooked fresh. I haven't tried it in over a year. I tried the canned spinach twice and I threw it up both times. These are great suggestions. It's so weird that iceberg had no fiber and is mostly water yet has such an affect on so many people. <shrug>?

No improvment yet. I was feeling "healthier" on the diet, but still no "C" improvement. After my last scope by the gastro he said soluable fiber might not ne the best thing for me with the gastroparesis. It's the same basic diet though. He told me to go off any diet, because nothing I tried made me any better. I think I need a motility specialist.

Anyway I'm back on the diet. It was good for my blood sugar. I just want to see if I can incorporate veggies and fruit instead of mostly starch.

Sorry to hear you were in the hospital. I've been in real severe pain like that in the past. ((huggs))

Hi, I am new to the board.....
I got Zelnorm yesterday for the first time and I suffer from terrible bloating. I also have hypothyroidism, so it makes it worse. I would just like to know something.......I love chocolate and can't help myself when it comes to chocolate. I work in a Chocolate factory in IT and seeing it is around me all day long, I find it very diff. not to eat it. Does this actualy make the IBS worse?

I'm probably being absurd, but most days lettuces agree with me of late--except ICEBURG lettuce. Why does it cause me such GAS AND BLOATING AND SPASMS? Romaine, leaf, spring mix don't have that effect in the least. Just iceburg. Strange. I see those "HEADS" of iceburg and seriously feel like I'm walking around with a ball inside of me if I eat it. The only thing I can think of is that it's sugar component is different. The stuff gives me pain as much as a cruciferous vegetable does. It's like a lettuce slushy inside of my body. Well, I'm not going to curse myself for skipping the iceburg.
