Hi, folks! I'm not quite sure which board to post this to, so I'm posting it here and on the IBS Fitness board. My general question is, have any of you
ever been taken to the hospital because of, or during an IBS attack? I never had, until last week, one week ago today, in fact. That is my biggest reason
for getting back on the boards, I realize I need help and support to control this thing.

I had eaten out at IHOP, (International House of Pancakes) with a group of friends. I had pancakes, egss with cheddar on them, and mozzarella. Yes, all
unsafe foods, I am sure! Not a half hour afterwards, I was nearly passing out because of the intense abdominal pain, cramps that could tear my abdomen
apart, and for the first time ever, I began to throw up during the attack. I've felt very nauseous before, but never gotten sick.

Boy, if I needed an incentive to eat healthy, and IBS safe, I just got one! I've been taking my acacia tummy fiber regularly now, and it's helping. I'm
also trying to eat safe foods. Heather says dairy is a trigger, but it is not for me. Are there others of you who can eat dairy with no troubles?

Thanks for listening, and I could use some feedback, if you've got it! :)

no I have never been to the hospital, but before I knew about the IBS diet and was eating bad foods I had a few times where I was on the floor with cramps and wanted to go to the ER, but I live alone and was not brave enough to drive away from a toilet.

I also eat dairy in moderation, with digestive enzymes, and never on an empty stomach.

My sister has been. That's how she finally figured out that she has IBS like the rest of the family. She thought she was having appendicitis or something, her stomach was hurting so bad. They told her she had one of the biggest gas bubbles they'd ever seen!!
I have not been to the hospital before, but I have been curled up in the bed, rocking myself & crying from the pain.

I don't believe dairy is a trigger for me either, by the way...I've never seemed to have a problem with it. However, I haven't yet cut it completely out of my diet & stabilized yet, so it could be one that I'm not recognizing. (It could be the main culprit behind my C.) Most of my triggers are spices, and some beef dishes.

My general question is, have any of you
ever been taken to the hospital because of, or during an IBS attack? Yes! In the last ten years: Once because the D-attack wouldn't stop even with meds (a friend took me), another time because of pain so severe I couldn't breathe (during a college course field trip--ugh!), and then because the D wouldn't stop and it coincided with a panic attack and I just didn't know what to do and was worried about dehydration. I never had, until last week, one week ago today, in fact. I'm sorry to hear that. How did they treat you in the ER?

After such a severe attack, I would always get an aversion to the foods I had eaten and felt were a trigger. Are you experiencing the same thing?

I'm lactose intolerant, but I find that even milk protein sets off an attack. How do you know dairy's not a trigger? Especially since it was a big part of the meal that sent you into such a bad attack?

Thanks for listening, and I could use some feedback, if you've got it! It sounds like you're doing the right things to get better, taking the acacia and coming to the boards for advice. I just wonder about the dairy...but it's my biggest, "no-fail" trigger so I ALWAYS wonder about dairy. I hope you're feeling better!

Hi, folks! Thanks for all the responses so far! I really appreciate it! I'm sorry any of you had to go through the pain of a severe attack, but it helps me to know that others have had attacks as severe as mine. I was feeling like something of a hypochondriac, because it had never been so terrible, but after seeing your responses, I know I'm not the only one whose felt that way.

The ER people treated me well. I am totally blind, and was out to dinner with a group of blind friends when this occurred. No one could drive us to the hospital, and I was afraid to leave the restroom of IHOP for fear of losing control, on both ends, if you get my drift. So they called an ambulance. They gave me pain meds through an IV first, then once I reached the ER, they gave me anti-nausea medication, which worked like a charm. They decided to do a CT scan of my tummy, even though they knew of the IBS diagnosis, just to make sure it wasn't something else in this particular instance. Any of you ever had to drink that huge glass of orange "contrast," for the CT test? Anyway, the tests came back normal, as I figured they would.

OK, so if you guys cut out dairy from your diets, what do you replace it with?

I have been when I was younger and my mom was worried and took me. There have been numerous times when my boyfriend was ready to call an ambulance or when I felt like I should go to the hospital. However, when I am having a severe attack I cannot talk or function or leave the bathroom, so by the time I could go to the hospital the worst would be over anyway.

Yes once when I had strange pain on the side and I was worried about gall bladder or other things. Urgent care would not see me so I went to ER and paid through the roof to be told I was constipated according to x-rays.

How can you be so sure you are not triggered by dairy? It sounds to me like the cheese at IHOP is what put you in the hospital. Dairy is hard for everyone's body to digest. Some things just do not break down nicely or easily and dairy is one of them- along with the fat that usually goes with it. If you follow Heather's guidelines exactly you will get better and not have pain.

IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!

yes it is a main cause of C and you can't tell it is dairy if it isn't causing immediate pain- nt new

OK, so if you guys cut out dairy from your diets, what do you replace it with? Very sorry you had to go through that. Dairy is often replaced with soy and rice fake dairy products. Soy milk is very tasty. Soy sour cream and cream cheese and creamer are very good too. Dairy free margarine such as Smart Balance is a great butter substitute and soy ice cream or sorbet is delicious and I hardly miss ice cream at all! Soy cheese on the other hand is not so great -especially if you are a cheese connoisseur.

Wow, that sounds awful! Throwing up though, that's not normally part of IBS. Unless you were throwing up from the pain (that happened to me once with a migraine) Wonder if it was something more than IBS, food poisoning or something. What did they tell you at the hospital?

Yes, I was at the point of going, a week before I was sent for tests... new

I was at the hospital 5/2-5/4 for much the same reason. I'd been feeling just a bit ick and then went to the chiropractor. Feeling better after the chiropractor I went home and made turkey spaghetti, 2 hours later my DH was driving me to the hospital for severe abdominal pains and vomiting. The pain killer at teh hospital was only working for like an hour at a time. Took 2 days and a stomach scope (which again was normal) before I felt up to going home.

I'm never drinking strange beer again. When it got to the point that I couldn't even have a sip of chamomile tea without nearly passing out with the pain, I knew I needed help!
