C question

Not that this is a big deal, I just want to hear some imput. I had a convention this weekend which means 6 hours minimum of sitting each day. So I did everything right and felt great Saturday. I drank enough, took my acacia, ate right and worked out in the morning.
Sunday I had 1/2 C and a little bloaty feeling coming on. Again I did everything right, worked out, had acacia, ate right (including veggies in pasta salad), drank tons of fennel tea and water. I supposed it might have come from the sleepy time tea on Saturday BUT then today I had full C! Which I don't get much anymore- not at all. I feel fine but I am wondering if it is only because of the sitting or could be something else. Would sitting that much really make me C if I am stable and doing things right? Is anyone suspicious of sleepytime tea? I don't think it could C me for 2 days. Any ideas would be appreciated. I know next time I will take my Phillips chews to be safe.

Hi there, I am a student and 3 days of the week (Mondays, tuesdays and Fridays)I am sat in lectures for 6 hours of the day where as wednesdays and thursday I only have 2 hours in the morning then a 3 hour break then followed by another hour. Every Tuesday morning, wednesday morning and Saturday mornig (every morning after sitting for 6 hours) I have Bad C and bloating. Where as the other mornings I dont D is a problem! I spent ages trying to figure out why this was and the only explanations I could come up with was either sitting down for long periods the day before, or having to get up 2 hours earlier and i think they both contribute. when im having a good ibs day I try to be as active as i can, which helps stop me being C. I even made a point of missing monday and tuesdays lectures for a week and found the C was definately much better the following mornings so yeah I personally believe that sitting down for long periods does give me C, although getting up early also does! grrr to those early morning starts and 6 hours of lectures I think thats a good enough excuse to skip them

I had also been thinking getting up at 5 contributed too. Ugh! It is like there is nothing really that can be done in that situation.

if youre usually active, then perhaps the long sitting did contribute. do you usually go to long conventions like that??

Tamara, I'm a severe "C" and travel makes me more C no matter what..whether it be sitting long hours, walking long hrs....it doesn't matter. It's simply being in a different place. It's and internal type of stress whether we feel stressed or not. Even women without IBS report more "C" when they travel. For me it's the time to take the "big guns"..of which I won't mention here but let's just say it involves (temporarily ) adding herbs to the familiar home routine. When I do that I avoid the proverbial C condition that I know will always happen unless I prepare for it. Kandee

I only drink bottled water...tap water in Houston is like drinking from a fish tank (no not really but you get the picture ). What is with bottled water causing "C"?

I always get C when travelling. I think when you throw off your routine it can just happen, even if you're eating right.

You did everything you possibly could have done to combat C. I call myself IBS-a, but when traveling or working a night shift, anything that offsets me I get C. When traveling (not that this is good) I usually bring something for emergencies.

Thanks all! That is what I figured. I wasn't travelling BTW only 30 minutes away and packing my own lunch and all. But I did not get C at my last convention last summer and I think it was because I was getting up about 7 then exercising and then sitting all day and this weekend and yesterday I got up at 5. So the plan is to do everything I did and take a Phillips chew on convention days (night before). BTW too I am back on track already. When you are pretty stable a "bobble" like this doesn't last too long.

How frequently can Philips Chews be taken without causing harm? Is once or even twice a week to much?

I am in so much pain, and so tired of hurting from this chronic constipation. I need something to take that will help me. Nothing has helped me so far.

Please, help me get out of this pain.

I hurt so badly form C. I need something that will help me go or I'm going go crazy from pain. I hurt so much and don't even feel close to having any sort of BM. Not even a little pebble.

I need to find something to take to stop this chronic and continual constipation.

I have so much pain, cramps, bloat.... I am so miserable I want to cry!

I don't know and have never been told if they are safe or not and if they are a stimulant or not. I take them every few months and take them on vacation a little bit. I am careful since it is always good to err on the side of caution.

It's equivalent to taking Milk of Magnesia, it's more bearable to take. I've tried them before and they leave a wierd aftertaste though. Once a week is not going to be harmful, just don't use it daily.

Because I have no issues at all with bottled, but tap water from other places-it must be the mineral content. I live in a city of a million and it's filtered to the wazoo. It's almost so filtered that it's bad, you know? Any iron, etc, makes me "bung up" or have D attacks.

are safe once a week? You don't think that's too much? Little Minnie thought once every 3 months or so. I'm scared of causing a cathartic colon.

Since it's just magnesium, I wouldn't see why not. My doctor told me taking MOM is okay once a week. I don't know, seems as though everyone has different opinions. Maybe you want to ask your own doctor? Good luck!

My doctor maintains that magnesium is not habit forming nor will cause cathartic colon.

No I didn't know how often you can take them or what the dangers were- not really. I have been wanting to find out for a while. Since it is just magnesium it seems to be the best idea for a little "help". So I am happy to know this. I still will continue to take them when really needed. I had noticed 1/2 worked at one time then I took them some and ended up needing 2. Then I didn't take any for a while and now 1 is enough again. I think it says to take 2 on the box which seems way too high. My mom gave them to me and said not to take over 1/2 at first and I was glad she did!

it may not work for you, but Zelnorm, Metamucil and lots of water, and following Heather's diet, and exercise. It's a lot but it works for me.

I have been reading through trying to find some suggestions for traveling. I just may not have looked into it far enough, but does anyone have any travel suggestions? I am FINALLY stable, and very excited about it. But I'm going to Italy in June, and I've very excited about that also, but I don't want to become C and not enjoy myself. I will be on a plane 8+ hours, and then a major time change. Should I try to keep my SFS on my time, or once I get there, change to theirs? (I usually take Miralax and Acacia with breakfast, and then Acacia in the evenings.) Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

Drink water and tea like its going out of style! We chose seats on the plane right by the bathroom so that I could just drink and pee as needed. I carried acacia in a pill bottle and asked for hot water from the attendants, then I mixed it in and put in bags of Eater's digest tea. I did this throughout the trip. I had tea everywhere- sometimes strange water is nasty, but tea is great. I was very regular. Have blended soups and vegetables too. Also go potty when and where you need to. Have fun!

I got very C, crampy, & bloated about 4 days into my trip, despite taking Miralax every morning. That's very normal for me when on vacation. It makes me SO MAD. Anyway, I also brought Zelnorm with me "just in case." Usually, 1/4 of a pill helps me if I need an occasional "boost" at home, but that didn't do any good on my trip. So I took 1/2 a pill one night, then took another 1/2 a pill the next morning with my Miralax. That did the trick. I went several times that day.

So my suggestion is to bring Zelnorm with you to take if you get in a "bind."
