Hi All!

I am a little confused about fiber. When I went in to see my doctor last week I told him that I have D all the time. He told me to up my fiber by eating fruits and vegies. He said Cherrios would be good too. I also bough Benafiber but haven't tried it yet.

So I started eating the cherrios and the fruits and vegies and the D got worse and more Frequent. I called the doctor and he told me to cut back on the fiber and drink a lot so I don't get dyhdrated. So I have done that and the D is still bad. I go 3-4 times in the first hour of my day.

I ordered the fiber that is on this website but haven't tried it yet. Should I go ahead and try that? Did the doctor get me all screwed up? I just don't know what to do to stop it. I have a meeting tomarrow and I can't have this going on.

Please Help!
Sarah

It is complicated, and its hard to know what to do.

The "breaking the cycle" diet was the only thing that got me out of the bathroom--literally. I still have D, but at least now I can mostly get on with my day. For a meeting, I would take some immodium. I was really worried about taking it, but both my doctor and the people here have finally convinced me that it is entirely worth it (and safe!) to use it. Even on a regular basis if you have to for a while in the begining.

Fiber helps. Especially SOLULABLE fiber--if you lean towards D. People who are C need more INsoluable fiber to help them "go"...but for those of us without *that* problem...we can get by with very little. Especially when things are bad.

Try the breaking the cycle diet, which is almost all soluable fiber. Avoid all triggers as strictly as you know how. Drink water! And hot teas! (Peppermint, Fennel, Ginger, and Chamomille, especially). I use benefiber in my hot tea, citrucel in cold things (like applesauce and smoothies), and heather's acacia in everything I bake. I also have the fibercon pills, but I only use them when I travel. Work up to the "recommended dosage" slowly though, especially if you haven't been eating much, it takes a bit of time to "adjust".

Oh, yeah, and hold your tongue right, squint your eyes, and hop on one foot, while dancing in a circle in the bathroom making human sacrifices to the toilette gods. (Kidding! --But it seems about the desperate sometimes, I know...)

Good luck. Take some Immodium for now, and try the diet here as carefully as you can. Oh, the trouble doctors can cause when they give conflicting (or outdated!) information! *Sigh*

...and re-read what Heather says. Like so many doctors, he's only got half the idea! SFSs good, veggies not so good!

I'm A too and have found Acacia to be wonderful. Love the stuff.

AlyssaKaye's given great advice for now. Just go slowly on the Immodium.
