Hello fellow gut wrenchers! I'm new to this board and am coming to this realization of IBS reluctantly.
I'm a 3 1/2 year colon cancer survivor. My tumor was low in my colon, I avoided a colostomy by mere centimeters. The surgical procedure was to remove all the rectal tissue, and then fashion what's called a J pouch - a reservoir for the accumulation of feces so it doesn't just slide on down. I went through radiation and chemo in addition to the surgery, so my poor gut has been through a lot of trauma since 2001.
I was told to expect more frequent bowel movements; but not the sorts of reactions I've been having to food. Several people have likened it to IBS and after reading up on it, I agree. So I'm here to learn how to get a handle on this.
I've worked with an acupuncturist for about 9 months with some success. He had me do a complete food cleanse last September/October and I noticed immediate results. I've been avoiding wheat, most dairy (when I do eat it I react), soy, corn, tomatoes, peanuts. I eat a lot of rice and veggies, rice pasta, almond milk, rice crackers, almond butter. Probably more fat than I should, though I've cut way way back on that.
My symptoms seem to be increasing again. I have many days of D and some days of C. The urgency I experience is compounded by the fact that I'm without the sphincter muscle that helps to control the flow -- so I suffer from a lot of anxiety, scoping out every bathroom that's within running distance everywhere I go, trying to arrange my social calendar so that I don't go out right after eating. Going to restaurants has become impossible -- I literally run to the bathroom within 20 minutes of eating a restaurant meal. There are days I make 20-30 trips to the bathroom. Sometimes it's very low volume but feels like it's huge.
So I'm wondering -- are there other colon cancer survivors on this board? I have to wonder about the trauma to my system being the cause or at least the impetus for this condition. I am willing to make some more changes if necessary to get a handle on this (even giving up my morning coffee and 1/2 and 1/2!!!). It really gets me down some days, having to spend so much time and energy worrying about my butt! I'm happy to find this forum to share ideas and to vent too! My partner is wonderful about it, but it's always good to have others who really know!
Thanks!

Hi there,
I just wanted to say Welcome to the boards. I hope that if you wander around here, you'll find some good information.
It sounds like you've been through so much already, I'm so sorry you are still having to deal with this sort of thing even after your surgery and all the treatments.
I am not 100% on this, but I don't remember reading any other posts from colon cancer survivors on these boards. There are people who have been through other surgeries and things that have been traumatic to their system and thought to bring on IBS, but I don't THINK I've seen anyone else post about colon cancer (except to be scared they'll get it!). You might wanna check on the Crohns and Colitis board too, to see if there is anyone over there.
Anyway, I hope you find some good info and help here and we're happy to have a new addition!
Cheers! Steph

HI and welcome. First, good for you for getting through all this - it sound's like it's been quite an ordeal but it also sounds like you have good doctors. I've heard of the J pouch procedure and it's no easy job - limited number of surgeons in the country who can perform it. Defenetly post on the Crohn's/Colitis board. I have seen posters there who've had bouts with colon cancer and also others who've had ostomy and J pouch procedures. For now, I would say it would probably help, and certaily not hurt, for you to start following the IBS diet. Good luck and hope you can start to feel better soon. Mindy

Well any gut trauma can cause IBS and cancer is pretty darn traumatic! Once you've got it, then you need to treat it the same no matter how you got it. This diet, SFSs, etc should really help.
This might be a bit "teaching my grandmother to suck eggs" but you do need to make sure it IS IBS.
Fyi, the hypno program started out from success with people having chemo.

Hello and Welcome to the boards! So sorry to hear all you have been through already. As mentioned, IBS can be caused by a trauma to the gut but you want to be sure there isn't anything else wrong. I'm sure you have great dr's and they have checked you out already.
I would recommend trying a SFS (soluble fiber supplement) like Heathers Acacia, benefiber or citrucel. They make give you a little extra gas at first but that usually goes away. Start slow and work your way up. Read through all the diet guidelines here and feel free to ask any questions!

But welcome to our not so happy club.
You know, once you eliminate all of your trigges, things really cool off. I've been having only severe cramps like once a week or so now, because I very seldom eat triggers now. Leaving coffee behind was a HUGE one. HUGE!
And, no I am not a cancer survivor, but I'm very inspired by those who are.
-------------------- Keep on keepin' on...
