Has anyone tried taking Lomotil for IBS-D?

If so, how is it working for you and how many do you take in a day? My doctor prescribed Lomotil for me but he wasn't sure how to dose it so he just used what was in his book which is 2 tablets 4 times a day. Seems a bit much so I have only been taking 2 tablets once a day but doesn't seem to do the job. I think I will try 2 tablets twice a day.

I just started taking it about three weeks ago. I take as need 1-2 tablets every 4-6 hours. I have found that if I take one I am usually good for about 5 hours and then I take another dose and that usually takes care of it. If I take two tablets twice a day I wind up being really C for a few days.

You don't say how strong your tablets are, but I found this web page which says in part:

Quote:

Dosage And Administration: Adults: The usual initial dose is 5 mg (2 tablets) 3 or 4 times daily ( 20 mg/24 hours in divided doses is the maximum recommended dosage). An individual maintenance dose can be subsequently determined. Downward adjustment should be made as soon as initial control of symptoms is accomplished. The maintenance dose may be as low as 1/4 of the dose required for initial control.

My GI guy prescribed Lomotil for me a couple of years ago during a really, really bad spell. At the time I didn't think it did any more than Immodium, but thinking back I feel like I was too cautious with the dosage. So I'd agree with the web page and your doctor. Once the D is under control, you can always back down on the dosage.

I have been on it for over 30 years as I was initially IBS D.

However if I had known it was a narcotic I may have had second thoughts but I only take a maximum of 1 and half tablets a day.
