I can't take my SFS or my probiotic. I've been careful and had no attacks Thank G-D, but I am soooo C and bloated. Any one experiancing the same?

On the other hand - I was able to convert alot of my safe recipes over to passover recipes. And I did not get sick at the Seder.

gas, cramps and solid D.. as in uncontrollable need to go! I think some of it was the wine at seder- I think I had about 2 oz TOTAL - I put a splash in my glass for each of the 4 cups because I know that grape juice gives me on the spot D almost!

The matza itself seems to be doing ok, but the lack of sfs and lack of other things is doing me in.. and I know about making safe treats.. I made a variant on my pulled chicken recipe for last night and ate it on baked potatoes! yummy!

still eating merengues and nuts too..

I am no expert since I am a VERY lapsed member of the faith, but, as far as I know, Judaism makes allowance for people with health problems that require them to follow certain diets. For example, you don't have to fast at Yom Kippur if you suffer from some sort of health problem that requires you to have food (for example, diabetes). In my case, I can't fast both because I suffer from blood sugar problems and IBS.

Judaism makes other exceptions too. For example, I believe a pregnant woman can have an abortion if, by carrying the baby to full term, the mother's life would be at risk.

I would be very surprised if the same philosophy didn't apply to Passover. I would think it would be okay for IBS people to eat their regular soluble fibre food (bread, etc.) if, by not eating it, they might get sick. I would also think they would not be required to eat or consume anything that might make them sick such as, for example, drinking wine at the seders or consuming the hot radish mixture (symbolic of hard times in the desert??) on matzoh.

Are there any experts out there who know for sure about this?

I know! The first two days were horrible with a lot of gas, C, and other issues. Today (Day 3) everything is catching up to me...bleah. I'm trying to cut back on some matzah, but it's rather difficult since everything here in school has matzah meal. I'm trying spelt matzah to see if it makes a difference.

Good luck everybody!

Well, you're right on most counts, but bread isn't allowed on Passover at all unless it's a life or death type thing. But yeah, wine isn't necessary and there are ways around the bitter herbs (horseradish is one of them, but there are other options, like endives or romaine lettuce).

By the by, the bitter herbs is reminiscent of the Egyptians making our lives bitter, not the hardship in the desert.

Metamucil is listed in the CRC (Chicago Rabbinical Council) Passover book as acceptable, if you can do that SFS. Flaxseed (the food, not the oil) is acceptable to some pretty strict authorities though some consider it "kitniyot"; even if considered kitniyot,
you cd pbbly get a medical dispensation even if you need it to manage; and NB---I've been finding quinoa to be an incredible substitute for oatmeal, brown rice etc. It tastes pretty good and can be prepared sweet or savory. I'm so grateful to have found it and have some at every meal. I've pretty much been avoiding matzah altogether as it tied my stomach in knots even before I had IBS-C. Good luck!!

and thus most rabbis wouldn't consider it an issue- my grandfather has major issues and eating matza constipates him, but he is fine if he eats other foods.... I find passover easy enough to keep other then the fact that I LIKE the wine and I like the horseradish so I wind up eating them!

Avidan:

Thank you for clarifying! Your post was very interesting. As I've said, I am VERY lapsed in my faith -- so lapse that I haven't practiced Judaism since I was 13 years old when I permanently rejected it for a variety of reasons. (My family never practiced it much before then either.) Still I have memories of what I was taught as a child in Sunday school and it's interesting that you say Judaism would allow leavened bread to be eaten during Passover if it was a life and death situation.

Yeah, life and death usually pushes off everything.
