Helps: Exercise(This is something I need to get back in the habit of)
Turkey (Maybe that's coincidence, but I had turkey for 3 days in a row last week, and that's when I started feeling like a normal person again)
Benefiber twice a day Pepto Bismal (Does that count?:) A safe snap a couple hours after lunch Staying on schedule for meals Eating breakfast at work instead of before I leave the house Oatmeal Minty herbal teas Fennel tea (I'm getting used to it.)
Hurts: Stress Oranges Brocolli And that's all I've figured out besides the usual dietary triggers. Speaking of oranges, would orange juice be as bad as orange pieces? I had an unpleasant experience with mandarin oranges a couple of weeks ago, but since I've been feeling a lot better, I was wondering about orange juice. Should I try it, or should I just not go there?

If oranges bother you and turkey helps...you might have migraines! Oranges make me positively ill and turkey has trytophan...good for my head! Just a thought...
i think you'd have to try the orange juice and see how you go.
I'm glad the turkey helped so much!!!! And I'm glad you're on the site...it's so super having you here Snorkie!

Ruchie, How much do you take and at what time[s] of day?
How does it help you to sleep better? I've heard that Calcium helps induce sleep but I didn't know that Mg did also.
Lastly, why do you take the malate form of MG?
Thanks, Joanne

...learning what to eat, when. That first little bit of pre-breakfast food was almost like a missing puzzle piece being snapped into place. If I wake up and eat breakfast, I'm done for... but if I wake up and eat a piece of toast or something else small, and THEN eat breakfast, I'm fine for the rest of the day 95% of the time. It's amazing, really!
Other helps:
*Bananas - I feel weird if I go a day without eating one! *Oatmeal - ditto! *Moderate exercise/activity *Cat snuggles, emails from friends, and all the myriad small things that keep me from getting moody *Smaller meals and more frequent snacks *PLENTY of water/herbal tea/teeccino - I really, really feel it if I don't drink enough.
Hurts:
*Eating too much *Any kind of negative emotion for an extended period of time *Not enough sleep *Not enough sunshine!

HURTS: -Dairy & the rest of the triggers, plus carrageenan -Over-eating -Stress & anxiety -Not enough sleep -Being sedentary -Not taking my IBS seriously -Pity-parties

That's a fibro thing, not an IBS thing, although magnesium is good for anyone with restless leg syndrome. Fibromites like Ruchie and I are typically low in magnesium and malic acid (the malate part).

Magnesium is good for IBS Cers as it helps you "go" and calcium is good for D. Vitmain C can also be a laxative. If you take these together keep watch and see how muh you take and how it effects your bowels. in the right quantities it can def help your bowels straighten themselves out!
Linz is right tho...I take mag malate for my fibro. ithout enough magnesium I'm DONE FOR

wow ruchie what a great thread!
Anything I could add would just be a repetition of what others have said BUT I just want to say that lately my IBS has been really good and I attribute it to two main things for me:
1. Exercise, exercise, exercise (and drinking lots of wate, getting lots of PROTEIN, and eating more often to go along wtih that)
2. NOT LETTING IBS RUN MY LIFE!
The last point is kind of like a huge revelation for me lately. I think this is something emphasized with the hypno tapes (? I've never done them) but this has helped me so much. The exercise started making me feel better such that I could forget about it for a bit - and then I don't know, I just made the decision to stop let it running my life. I know it sounds a little flitty and airy and such but I'm happy
And the number one thing that hurts? That time o' the month - no matter how well I'm doing, the MINUTE I start bleeding on the first day of my period, welcome D (ugh). That usually lasts a few days and then it subsides, but still! Not something I want to have to deal with every month

HELPS: Metamucil- more in helping me better tolerate a variety of foods, helps me go a little Colace Fiber Choice?- recently started it and not whether it's helping, it's certainly not hurting though Apples- with the peel, they help me go! Loosly following Heather's diet- since I'm able to eat more foods now I don't have as much trouble
HURTS: Chinese food- but I eat it anyway Too much high fat foods- I can eat some and be ok, but too much and oowww! Candybar type of chocolate- I can have some fat, and I can have chocolate, but put the 2 together and ouch! Not being consistant with taking Metamucil Not taking Colace More then a little flaxseeds Eating oatmeal several days in a row More then a little whole grains Wearing pants that are higher cut and tight Various other fiber supplements
