I read that I can eat pasta, but the cafeteria and most restaraunts I assume make pasta with butter in it. Am I able to eat this pasta or not, what do you do when making pasta, do you use a substitute for butter, and when eating out, do you not order pasta, do you order pasta as is or do you order pasta and request it have a substitute in that.

if there is butter on the pasta then no you can't eat it. You must avoid ALL dairy, no exceptions. Over here (ireland) there isn't usually butter on pasta when I eat out..ask your server if there is butter on it, and if there is then ask for it without butter.
I order pasta with a tomato sauce.

OK butter is a DAIRY PRODUCT. All dairy is out.
See the diet section and Heather's cheat sheet!!!

If there is tomato sauce in the pasta...try and find out if there a lot of oil in it (here I think it's often like 1/4 cup oil per cup...I could be wrong tho!) has this ever been a prob for you Sinead?
I agree...no butter! The best oils btw are canola and olive oil....and in baking use applesauce to replace large quantities of oil. Fat=IBS attack! So watch out there!
You're doing great V!

When I make it and I want it plain - I use smart balance light. It is non dairy, low fat and non-hydrogenated and all that. It also is a lot easier to control how much you put it than a liquid oil.
If I am making a dish and want a sauce -- I make a white sauce (because I have acid issues with red sauces) -- there is a recipe in the recipe section that is simple and fast.

I guess the next time I eat out, I will ask for no butter, and if they can't then I don't eat the pasta. What about spaghetti with white clam sauce, does that contain dairy?

Yes, it does. Like I told you in the other posts, avoid cream (white) sauces as they almost definitely contain butter, cream, milk or cheese.

The white sauce mentioned further up this thread is a safe one from the Recipe Index here...so made without dairy! White sauces in restaurants are never safe.

No Ruchie, the only problem I have ever had with eating tomato pasta sauce out is that there's too much garlic and it repeats on me. I do have a pretty high tolerance to fat.
