Quick question on eating while constipated

Is it okay to continue eating normal amounts even though I am so constipated, or is this just making the situation worse?

Should I only be doing a liquid intake and cutting back on real food until I get some sort of good BM? How much real food is okay?

If so, any suggestions on how to get the nutrients I need?

Thanks again, all.

I try and judge how I am feeling. Sometimes when I am really constipated I won't eat as much but drink alot of water. Other times eating sometimes makes me go. Unfortunately I don't follow a set plan! This past week I have been eating and just waiting to see if I will go. I am going just not well!!! Remember to drink lots of water!!!!

good question Beth. I know that even though I'm constipated, I'm still really really hungry. I can't believe how much I eat sometimes. It's like my head is telling me that if I eat enough, somehow that will make my tummy feel better! Sorry I don't have an answer for you. I hope someone does though,I'd be curious to find out.

even though I am full of "crap". But worry about loading my body with even more stool to the point of being plugged up even more.

what I really don't get is why, if I had a BM this morning & really nothing to eat since then, why am I gassy?????????? There really shouldn't be too much down there to cause problems right? Damn I hate this! Why won't the gas just stop coming? No matter what I do I can't stop the smelly stuff!

"They" say 8 glasses a day for "normal" folks, I say a minimum of 12 glasses a day for C folks!!!

How do IBS-Cers do with smoothies and/or vegetable juices like V-8? Do these add to the constipation or cramping pain? Or do they help because they're liquidized? It would seem like a good way to get some nutrients and calories and be easier on the digestive system. My grandfather has chronic C (he has many health problems); I worry that he's not eating well because of it and I don't want him to suffer any more than he has to!

Thanks for your help!

When I do eat, although very constipated, I get more "belching" and gassy too. It's like I'm all filled up, so it it comes back up in the form of a belch. UGH!

I have to force myself to eat- as much as it just makes the fullness feel worse and worse-- Because if I stop eating I won't restart until I feel better. But the cycle is- that when I stop eating I don't feel better because that just makes it worse, the acids churning around in my tummy.
Isn't good.
But I do try to keep something in my stomach.
This may not be the proper thing to do but I do it anyway.
This probably didn't help but I wanted to reply just to let you kow someone else out there has to make those same decisions also.

I don't know about the V-8. I should say I don't know much about V-* as I don't drink it. But what about those supplment drinks such as Boost, Ensure for the nutrients etc... Not saying this will cure the C but it has alot of vitamins and nutrients...
Just a suggestion
Hope he is feeling better soon.

or some form of milk, although they say lactose free. So Boost and Ensure are out for us.

Yes, the V8 could be a problem with tomatoes.

Thank you for your suggestions! My grandfather's not doing too well--the family got some not so good cancer-related news today--but he's had a good life. I just want him to be comfortable and the C makes him really grouchy! Thanks again!

Boost and Ensure contain a lot of fat. That could aggravate an IBS attack. Most protein powders (rice protein or soy protein) are quite low in fat and high in nutrients. Just be wary of the types of sweeteners. Some of them contain guar gum, which kind of loosens things up. Blended with fresh or frozen fruit they are wonderful and great if you require a protein perk/boost. I use a rice protein powder. Green drinks often contain whey and other ingredients which might aggitate an individual with IBS--D.
