I'm confused.

*sigh*
I haven't given up dairy yet.
Infact I probably have something of it daily, I even drink full glasses on non fat milk.

Stress and hormones are deffiantly my main trigger.
I'd probably control my diet more if I were more in need of dealing with stress. But as a SAHM and I go out maybe twice a week, although with Spring warming thing up here in the frozen North then I get to go out walking more.

I still often splurge on the no no foods.
If I do, I do so only at home when relaxed, never on an empty tummy and usually with a tall glass of Peppermint/Fennell tea afterwards.

In the past I have gone on milk strikes and not seen a huge difference.
It's the cost tho that halts it.
My hubby gets 7gallons of milk free thru assistance, he refuses to buy the soy or whatever other type milk.
He also hates buying fish for me instead of meat. We get free check for a local butcher where we can pack our freezer with every kind of red meat imanginable!
But I do admit I feel better after a nice dinner of fish than of hamburgers or porck chops.

So HOW do you all afford this stuff????
And why do you think I din't have as many strong triggers besides ofcource stress.
Honestly there are few things I can say with certainity will give me IBS.....like coffee guranteed'll do it, high fat foods like donuts or KFC. But my list is not as long as yours.....or am I in denial??

I can still do dairy and some of the other no no's. I think everyone is differant. you learn how and what you can or can't eat and when an attack is coming. Stress is a huge one for most of us.

As for how do I affored this I just try to limmit what I buy and look for deals. I do use soy milk because I have always had a problem with just straight milk. I also use ground turkey instead of red meat and I use egg beater. The only other thing I buy differant is my Luna bars and my tea's. I also noticed the first few trips to the store where the most expensive after that it all is about the same.

I'm on a very restricted budget and I do fine with this diet. Soy milk is my splurge but the rest I can buy very cheaply - staples are cheap (bread, potatoes, pasta...) which is nice. Now I don't get free milk or meat but in the stores big bags of frozen fish and chicken are cheaper than most cuts of meat (especially if you catch them on sale and buy TONS!) I also save money because going out for me rarely involves buying food any more - I always bring something from home which is invariably cheaper.

I wouldn't assume to know your condition better than you but I'd be inclined to say try at least two weeks or so (instead of just a few days) of cutting out ALL the triggers - dairy, red meat, high fat, etc. and see how you do. You can't really know if these things *aren't* triggers for you unless you give it a good week or two or three of cutting them out. Then be sure to reintroduce them ONE BY ONE so you know which are ok for you and which are not (i.e. don't have a ham sandwich with cheese and mayo - if it triggers your IBS, you can't be sure if it's the meat or the cheese or the mayo!)

Some people can tolerate some of the triggers yes - but I'd wager that very very few of them got 'stable' without cutting them out first until they were stable.

Explain to your husband that this is a *health* condition and that eating these foods is (or might be) making you SICK. Show him this site maybe. I would hope that he would understand.

I can completely commiserate with the need to eat low-budget, but personally I'd maintain that it's very easy to eat cheaply on this diet. Besides supplements (which, I would say, are secondary to the diet - maybe excluding a good SFS) there are no expensive, specialty foods on this diet that are necessary. Soy milk is optional - you can do with out it. I've never had milk my whole life and I've just started having soy milk these past few years.

Anyway, hope that helps.

PS You mentioned the frozen north - Canadian?

That's odd as fresh herbs are listed as insoluble fiber, so I would think dried herbs would be safer?

Do others use fresh or dried? Which is safer?

I know a lot of mine, and some of mine are weird...

*dairy (though I can have casein in rice cheese and be ok)
*meat (I'm a vegetarian now, practically a vegan)
*anything high in fat
*almonds
*caffeine
*alcohol
*sorbitol or any other wood alcohol sugars
*whole wheat
*raw fruits and veggies
*broccoli and cauliflower
*anything spicy (it does not help having a boyfriend from Houston sometimes!)
*stress
*not getting enough sleep
*soy (except for some reason, soy sauce is ok...)
*heat/humidity
*carbonation
*eating too much in one sitting
*not getting enough IF
*not drinking enough water

I think that's most of them....I'm IBS-A, btw.

I don't know why that is! Maybe dried herbs are more potent and I just add too much? I'm lazy and don't measure things out...so...PROBLEMS! Also, I'm IBS-D, so maybe that makes me more sensitive to the dried herbs?

I thought IF was okay as long as you had SF first or combined it with an SF. For example, if I have pasta and add in a little bit of chopped fresh basil I don't have a problem with it. I avoided IF when I was "breaking the cycle," but I feel I'm pretty much stable so I can incorporate more IF with my food. According to Heather, "You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." So, that's what I've been trying to do.

when eating a SF with veggies, that the fresh herbs would be too much added insoluble in addition to the veggies. And I'm a C! I would much prefer fresh herbs, but the dried are more convenient and the fresh go bad so quickly and I only cook for one, so wouldn't use the whole package anyhow.

I would be interested to here if others have a problem with dried herbs??? Maybe that is part of my problem? I don't know. Seems like a lot of the recipes on the board call for dried herbs, or am I wrong?
