Hi, I was diagnosed with IBS in December 2004. Onset was D but seems prominently C. I am on Zelmac the Aussie form of Zelnorm. Since January, I have been following Heather's diet and recommendations which have helped me feel much better. I have complications other than IBS: Asthma, Fibromalagia, Poly Arthritis, Thyroid Disease, Osteoporosis, Esophagitis, Chronic Fatigue, Depression, etc.
Since September 2003 I have experienced a steady weight loss
now down to 100 pounds from 145 pounds. I don't seem to be gaining although I'm eating well. Also since September 2004, I have experienced steady hairloss from the folicle, little hair regrowth, much greater loss than previously experienced because of my thyroid disease.
Is it possible because of the motility problems of a C with IBS, that I may have a malabsorption problem? What tests can determine this diagnosis? Should I also be tested for Celiac disease?
Thanks for any help you can give me!!

You should have been tested for Celiac disease before you got diagnosed with IBS, but you might want to check this was done properly.

Given your symptoms, especially with the hair loss as well, you might want to ask your doc about Lupus...you may have that instead of Fibro - the fatigue/pain side is very similar, as are some of the "extras" but arthritis, osteoporosis and hair loss sound awfully like Lupus not Fibro.

I have major hair loss as well!! I thought it was due to thyroid, but so far my TSH has been normal. Just more reason to ask whatever new doc I find about the Lupus possibility.

Thanks you for bringing this up. I probably don't have Lupus, but I definitely need to check this out.

I agree with Linz, you should get checked with this. Also a few of those symptoms sound similar to Lymphocytic/Microscopic Colitis. Ask your GI doc.

Thanks Linz
I am now waiting for blood test results for Celiac Disease,
plus several other tests trying to clarify what is causing
the Malabsorption. Possibly more tests to follow will know a week from Friday. I will inquire about the lupus, but hope that isn't the case.

Yes, it's worth checking out, but it is my understanding that any hormonal imbalance or malnutrition can cause it too.Kandee

...even stress apparently!

But Lupus sounds scarily like some of Beth's symptoms.
